My mother-in-law and very dear friend was just diagnosed yesterday with ovarian cancer which has spread to her lung with an additional mass on her pelvis and she is regularly coughing up blood. She has not been told the stage yet but we're assuming stage IV. She is currently on her way from Mayo in Scottsdale to M.D. Anderson in Houston for a second opinion. The physician she saw in Scottsdale told her to come home to Alaska and wait until after the holidays to begin chemo (once a month for six months). He said the chemo works the same whether the mass is 2cm or 6cm. This sounds crazy to me! Shouldn't she begin treatment immediately? Is he, in an indirect manner, suggesting chemo will not help? Any info. would be greatly appreciated. We're absolutely devastated and going crazy.

Chemo does "NOT" stop ovarian cancer; it only slows it down & quality of life issues come up with this treatment. There are better treatments that do target the cancer.
"The most powerful force driving cancer research is Big Pharma's need for a hefty bottom line and a quick return on its investments.
It is enough to make the angels weep.

Thank you for your response. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. My mother in law will have her 4th chemo treatment this week. She has been diagnosed stage IIIc ovarian cancer and stage III non-small cell lung cancer (yes, two primaries.) She is currently taking Essiac tea, Himalayan Goji juice, Biotics Mo-Zyme (Molybdenum). Her doctors are quite surprised by how well she's handling chemo. However, we are concerned that her doctors told her not to change her diet while on chemo, just to eat reasonably so she maintains her weight. I would think with all the emphasis on healthy diet in our society that there would be more specific diet guidelines for cancer patients. Is there anything she can do after chemo to help build her immune system and prolong a recurrence (she'll most likely have radiation and surgery after her 6th chemo?) Thanks so much for your time. JB

Surgery is a good approach, but chemo is not & it will not stop ovarian cancer. You need to look at quality of life issues & you should look at treatments that target the cancer, not systemic poisons. There are several ways to approach this. One is Virotherapy & another is Immunotherapy. These programs do target the cancer. If you are interested I can give you much more information.

The problem with ovarian cancer is that it may end up in your mother-in-laws liver. That is lethal, unless she pursues a course of treatment that targets her cancer. She will "not" be cured from chemo. It's important that she gain some healthy weight, because if it is found in her liver she may die from malnutrition, before the cancer takes her life. Ovarian cancer is extreemly tough to cure & systemic poisons only give you a little more time, with a very poor quality of life. My heart goes out to her, because this is a very brutal disease.
