Bone Scan

I am having a pain in my hip joint. It only hurts when I role over in bed or cross my legs. I'm fine standing and walking. I am concerned my RCC has spread to the bone. I mentioned it to my Onc yesterday, and he said my last Cat Scan showed nothing in this area, and we would watch for it on my next scan. I said Cat Scans are not good at showing bone mets, and he agreed, and we scheduled a bone scan. I am having anxiety about the bone scan. Can anyone tell me what it is like? Is there an interveinous injection? If so, what is it and how does it feel? Do you slide into a tube like a Cat Scan and how long does it take? Is ther pain involved? The hip pain may be just age related, and I'm not sure I want to go through this when It could be just arthritis. Would like to hear from those who have had a bone scan.

Had bone scare prior to RCC surgery couple of years age.

You will be laying on table just like an x-ray table that I am sure you saw many a time before when going to for x-ray.. The x-ray technician will tie you down and a square box will “ride” over you. You do not feel any pain and for that matter any think. The only part that I will warren you is that you will receive radioactive material injected to you vain. Otherwise every thing went well. It takes about an 45 minutes if I remember correctly.

Good luck.

My husband, Dave, just had a bone scan a few days ago.  He said to tell you there is no pain, and it is pretty much just like having a CT scan.  They give him intravenous contrast dye 2 hours prior to the scan.  The scan itself takes about 30 minutes, he says.  He slept through his last one.  It's a piece of cake...nothing to worry about.

I'm hoping you get good news!

Hi Richard

When I first started on Interferon I used to get a pain in my hip joints in bed and have to turn over onto the other side. On some nights I could wake up 4 or 5 times with pain in the hip I was laying on. After a couple of months it stopped and I have not had it happen again.

I d not know if you are on Interferon or something else but maybe it is a side-effect.
