Hello Everyone,

I am in remission and would like some advice. I have read numourous stories on this site on removal of the entire stomach found lil positive remarks. I have to make a decision on this surgery. I am now doing naturopathic treatments as the days go by on my decision for this surgery. I am being hopeful on my healing journey.but need a lil reassurance that there is a good chance of leading a normal life with a strict diet that leads to no complications in the future.with this type of surgery.

Waiting for your helpful replies.

God bless and Keep Strong and Postive.

Mai

My husband had a total gastrectomy in August of 2007. It has had little effect on what he can and cannot eat. Even the amount he eats at a time is not all that restricted. Probably on the average normal size servings, like what we should all eat.

He does have a problem gaining and maintaining his weight, but he always has, he has always been very thin. While he was in remission and on no treatment he got back to and maintained his preoperative, precancer weight .He had a recurrence and is on chemo again and is about 20 pounds below his normal weight.

The only thing he cannot eat ever is steak and the white meat of chicken. Everything else is fine.

Good luck.

Lissa

Dear Mai, My husband had the surgery in August of 2005 with removal of most of his stomach and esophagus. He eats smaller portions of food than before his surgery...but they really are what a normal portion should be! He is a chef and food is his life, and while we had to adjust to a new normal, he really does have a fabulous life. He just published his first cookbook and will be appearing on national morning shows (usa) this summer. The surgery is a doozy, but very worth it. in strength, Amy
