Hi, is anyone know how to reduce the pleural effusion?

My mom just did drain out the pleural effusion on few day ago, but she has the lung fluid again now.

Any medicine that she can eat to reduce the pleural effusion?

Any foods that she can't eat? such as salt. etc?

Eat any foods can make the pleural effusion gone?

Thanks for the suggestion!!!

And also, my mom will do the chemo on next tuesday (next 4 days from this message). She said the pleural effusion make her feel sore when she sleep. Now she can't sleep at the night time very well. What i can help her? does she need to drain out the fluid from her lung? or drain after the chemo?

I've read about talc on this message board.  You might want to look into that.    Roz

Pls ask the doctor to take a sample to test this fluid to determine they are either a Transudate (liver or kidney or malnutrition) or Exudate (pneumonia - pulmonary test, TB, connective disease arthritis, cancer, pancreas caused) to treat her right at start instead drain over and over...

Good luck!

Talc (derived from the Persian talc via Arabic talq) is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the chemical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. In loose form, it is the widely used substance known as talcum powder. It occurs as foliated to fibrous masses, its monoclinic crystals being so rare as to be almost unknown. It has a perfect basal cleavage, and the folia are non-elastic, although slightly flexible. It is sectile and very soft, with a hardness of 1 (Talc is the softest of the Mohs' scale of mineral hardness, and can be easily scratched by a fingernail). It has a specific gravity of 2.5–2.8, a clear or dusty luster, and is translucent to opaque. Talc is not soluble in water, but it is slightly soluble in dilute mineral acids. Its colour ranges from white to grey or green and it has a distinctly greasy feel. Its streak is white.

I don't believe the diet has anything to do with pleural effusion.  To my knowledge the only way to clear it is to have it drained.  And it should be tested for cancer cells.

There is a procedure whereby the fluid is drained and "talc" is placed inside to prevent it from reoccurring.  It is a special procedure.

You need to speak with her doctors and have them explain everything to you.  There is nothing you personally can do.

Do a search on pleural effusion on the web.  It will explain a lot of things but each person is different so only her doctors can respond accurately for her.

Good luck and God Bless

It's not a medicine.  Type talc into the search bar at the top of the page and you will be able to read more about it.  I believe it's used to create a seal to prevent fluid build up.  Roz

My mom can't sleep last night. She told me her back was so sore even she ate a sleeping aid. I am gonna deliver her to hospital and see can they do the Talc or drain the pleural effusion for her today or tomorrow since she needs to do the first chemo on this month 26th.

If she drain out the pleural effusion and do the talc, is it affect her chemo result? or do it after the chemo?

 Any suggestion?

It is so cute for you to say you are gonna to deliver Mom to Hospital :)

Does she get bowel movement regularly?  Make sure she can turn at night (sleep on the side instead back only).  Any stomach bloating?

Also, try not to feed her too late at night.  Is it sore or pain?  It could be her tumor in that region is growing.....
