Odds of reoccurrence?

1 1/2 years ago my husband had a kidney removed that contained a tumor > 14 cm (weighing in at approximately 6 pounds).  The tumor was confirned to the kidney, but was found to be the "papillary" type with a Fuhrman grading of  3; and rating of PT2 NO MO. The doctor suggested scans every 6 months for a couple  years, but no other treatment.    We've gotten so much conflicting information that we don't know where to turn.  Does anyone know the odds of this returning?   Shouldn't they have done some chemo or something?

Yes! On both things. Reoccurrence is something you need to watch out for.I went four years before mine came back to the adrenal gland. I was put on nexavar this time after surgery to stop or (at least try to) the growth of a new tumor.I went through three doctors before i found my life-saver. Ask to be put on nexavar as a precautionary measure,Don't put it off,it's your life not the doctors life.Good luck.Get well soon.

That is twice the size of my tumor and I had the same grade. 1 1/2 yrs later it showed up in my lung. My personal advice is to seek a 2nd opinion. Who is doing the followups, what kind of doctor? Urologist or Oncologist? Again, I would recommend a 2nd opinion and I would suggest you see a Oncologist if you haven't yet.

My husband has the same type of kidney cancer that you husband has "papillary" and almost the same tumor size and grade.  Tumor was removed in 2007 and was immediately found in the lungs.  He has been on Sutent, Torisel, Tarceva and now Nevaxar.  Nevaxar seems to be helping a little.  It is very important to get 2nd opinion.  My husband has CT's every three months.  My husband's brother now has been diagnosed with the same type but his tumor was smaller and contained.  So far he is cancer free.  Our prayers are with you and all the others fighting cancer.
