RE: Klatskin Tumor

What wonderful news!! My husband had stage one of klatskin tumor and had it removed last September. He then went thru radiation for 5 weeks, and started w/ chemo, but developed a dueodenal bleeding ulcer that has been an on going problem since Easter. The last time in the hospital they did an embolization of the artery that was fueling the ulcer. They were hesitant at first to do this as they weren't sure he had enough blood flow to his liver. After many tests they decided they could go ahead. We have been home for 4 weeks now, and my husband is very careful with what he eats, so that his energy is not spent on digesting food, and causing him pain. So be very careful of radiation, especially if you have clean margins, as my husband did. We had complained for almost a month that he was burping, and that he had pain that went away when he ate. Turns out these were all signs of an ulcer that the oncologist missed. It nearly cost my husband his life.

I live in San Jose, Ca.Hello ThomasL,My wife at the age of 53 was diagnosed with Bile Duct Cancer in the Hepatic Y...a Klatskin Tumor. Major surgery in July of 2003. Karen has had many complications and they all started approximately 3 years after the original surgery. You may be a fortunate one and by pass complications. Her cancer resurfaced three times. The first two times she was treated with oral Chemo and Cyberknife Radiation treatments...they corrected the problem. But now 6 years later the issue is more serious. Her last PET/CTscan showed a tumor on her liver, not only that...Karen was experiencing blood flowing through her exterior bile drain tubes. With more test, they found that a cancer tumor invaded her portal vein thus causing internal bleeding. The IR department at UCSF inserted a stent into the portal vein and the bleeding stopped. Karen is doing another PET/CTscan to see if more tumor cells are in the liver area, as well as the original surgery area, possibly in and around the lymph nodes. There is so much I can tell you about this horrible illness, I have binders of information, about issues that surfaced, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars personally spent and the $2.5 million spent by our insurance provider.Karen is currently scheduled to have a port inserted for chemotherapy treatments starting in a few weeks. They tell us Karen is one of the fortunate one's...she is considered a survivor. They claim with this cancer less than 7% make the 5th year. Our family is very thankful that this horrible cancer did not take Karen from us. We are trying to stay positive through this next challenging battle.I see you are from San Jose, CA...we are from Alamo, CA just north of Danville, California. Karen has been very well treated at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco. If I may ask, where were you treated...I assuming, Stanford Medical Center. If so, one of Karen's surgeon's back in 2003 was Dr. J Norton, now with Stanford Medical.Well I can go on and on, but sometimes enough is enough. As a prime care-giver to my wife...my life has been overly consumed these past 6 years with medical issues. If you need to know anything more specific...just post a message. Take Care and I wish you all the best,Leonard
