Sore Throat and a Whisper Voice

Hi Everybody,

I had a total removal of my thyroid on 6/4/2009, for a 4cm nodule with Hurthle cells.  Luckly my lab results were good.  Since my surgery I cant get above a whisper and that is labored.  My throat is sore.  I am coughing alot and seem to be choaking on phlegm.  Has anyone had this problem?  When I first get up I can talk for about an hour so dont think damage has been done to vocal cords.  Who knows tho.   Any help and or advice on this voice thing is greatly appreciated.  I will be glad to share my hurthle cell story I have gone through with anyway facing it. Just ask!  Gee until a month ago I had never heard of a "hurthle cell" I was so stressed and can feel for anyone going through it. Good luck to all facing this. Also does anyone drink coffee in the am after taking synthroid drug?  I had read where this is a no no...

 Thanks,

Annette

Annette - I don't have any words of wisdom on your throat, but do you know where you might have seen that on coffee? I drink a lot of coffee in the mornings after taking my thyroid hormone. I haven't been told not to, or anything, but if there's an effect there, I should probably look into it.

I will go back over my printed material this evening and post it tomorrow.  I love my morning coffee also.

Well as it turns out it was on the top of my stack.  Go to the Wikipedia the free encyclopeida and type in Levothyroxine.  Go do page to dosage and percautions section in the third paragraph it states "Recently, it has been discovered that caffenine may also interfere with the intestinal  absorpton of levothyroxine.  I guess one would have to define "may"  I dont think a couple of morning cups will hurt.  Hope this helps you.

In my case it's not a couple of cups... more like a couple of pots! Might explain why I'm up to a dose of 250 on the Synthroid...

I checked out the reference in PubMed, and looks pretty legit. I can only hope some future study refutes it. Asking me to go without coffee is like asking me to go without oxygen. It ain't pretty. ;-)

Hi, I had two partial thryoidectomies to get to a total! After the first side, I did experience some hoarseness. I couldn't yell for a few weeks ( my kids liked that !) After the second one, I had no hoarseness or voice issues. I did have some coughing and phlegm with both. I think that is a reaction to the tube down your throat for the anthesthesia (sp?). The tube is irritating. The phlegm did last for awhile unfortunately. Good luck to you !

Good Morning,

I like your sense of humor.  What dosage did you start out on?  Mine was 100mg daily. I bet that will change after first trip to the doctor.   Did you lose hair.  If I am reading correctly that will only happen if your dosage is off.  Oh well hair is not everything. Also do you know if you can purchase home testing kits to use between doctor visits?  Yea!!! my voice is much better today.  Suppose it takes time.  Thank you so much for taking time to talk to me.  Gee sometimes this makes you feel so all alone.

Can't remember what dosage I started on, as was been on it so many years prior to the cancer. Was stable on 150 for a few years. Just before surgery, had gone from 175 to 200.

I shed some hair when I was hypo, before I started getting treated (again, years ago). Not enough that my hair looked thin. Mostly, it was dry, along with my skin -- went through boodles of hair conditioner and hand cream/ I believe you are correct that hair dryness/thinning should only occur if your dose is off.

As for testing between times, it takes 4 to 6 weeks after any increase in dose for the blood levels to get up to where they should be. So, if you test it prior to that, it's not going to give you an accurate assessment of whether the dose is adequate or too much.

That said, where I live, they have a health fair deal where they run 20 or 30 blood tests for $20, including a full cholesterol panel, glucose, liver function and TSH. I'm on medication for a different condition that carries a risk of Type II Diabetes & metabolic syndrome, so I do the full health fair panel twice a year. Also be aware than when your TSH is off, it can mess with your lipids (cholesterol & triglycerides). You might check to see if your community has any comparable program.

When I first read your message, it didn't register with me how recent your TT was. I was coughing for a while afterward. Speaking voice came back fairly fast, but couldn't sing for at least a month. Everyone seems to heal a little differently, but some coughing and voice issues at this point is probably not unusual and will likely resolve themselves. No guarantees, but probably too soon to worry. Get some rest, take care of yourself and give yourself some time to heal.

Everything you're going through is perfectly normal for the majority of us.  I couldn't eat anything substantial for almost a week after TT.  Swallowing pills was a real job; at least 2 weeks before it was normal again.  I didn't have a full voice for about 6 weeks.  Over a year later and my voice still wears out.  I've had everything check and my vocals are fine.  It's just what sometimes happens.  Just have patience.  But beware...after the RAI you will probably lose your sense of taste for 4-6 weeks.  Everything will taste like tin.  A great diet!!!

As for coffee, I've never heard it.  I've been on synthroid for over a year now.  My numbers have stayed steady and I have 2 cups/morning.  Always remember to take it on an empty stomach.  If you take it in the morning, don't eat for at least an hour.  If at night, allow 3 hours after your last food.

Stay positive...you'll be fine!
