my mom was diagnosed with stage 3-4 stomach cancer about a month and a half ago. she has had 2 rounds of chemo at the cancer care center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is having trouble eating and keeping her weight up. we don't know anyone whose had stomach cancer so there's no one to talk to and get advice about what to expect and how to increase eating. If anyone would be willing to give her a call or talk here that would be soooo appreciated!

God Bless!!

Ask her doctor whether megestrol may be appropriate.  it helped a lot with my father's appetite.

My Mom too had her stomach and part of her esophagus removed back in 2005.  She had stage 3.  She had over 50 rounds of chemo and radiation.  Its been a really hard battle but the secret to gaining or maintaining weight is to eat very small portions of food every couple of hours.  We had to mince or grind everything.  We found through trial and error which foods that would make her sick.  Stay away from any acidity foods, some dairy, and definitely no processed foods otherwise she would get cramps, very gassy, the heaves and sleep most of the time. She gets Vitamin B12 shot every four weeks, takes multivitamin, vitamin c and powdered drink from the nutrition store (she won't drink Ensure or instant breakfast).  We also get her to do exercises like light walks, or if in bed do leg exercises to keep her muscle tone as she's only 75 lbs.  Her weight before surgery was 160 lbs.  Just tell her to make sure she sticks to proper eating.  I know after my mother spent 60 odds yrs of eating the same way its hard to change but if she wants to be healthy she has to follow it. I wish your Mom the best of luck.  They'll be trying times ahead of her
but with the support of family and friends she will rally.  If you ever feel the need to email please do so.  Its always nice to chat with someone who's already been through it.

Ask  her doctor about Marinol also for an appetite stimulate.  It may help.  Also, nutritional drinks like Ensure or Boost are helpful.  Try to get her to eat protein. Very important to keep her protein levels up.

 Best Wishes.

My husband was diagnosed last September with Stage III stomach cancer.  He had 75% of his stomach removed and 22 lymph nodes.  He has gone through chemo but refused radiation.  He is doing really well right now.  He has gained almost all of his weight back and is even able to do yard work.  He can eat about anything.  His last scan showed nothing.  He has another coming up in July,  Hopefully, it will be good also,  Hang in there cause it is a tough fight.  Vicky
