hello Its the one with all the complications after surgery

wondering what else can happen to my poor  husband now.

Out of ICU after 26 days, now on surgical recovery ward, 9 days. Barium swallow test finally done yesterday anatamosis still an issue but surgery absolultely off the table, thank god for that.

Dr.'s now advance the drain tube out a little at a time causeds terrible pain to my husband, but the theory is that miniscule hole will heal properly Surgeon assures me there is no stricture. So, why is my husband constantly vomitting. J-Tube is  not being used they keep trying to swtich him from the PCT line feeding to J Tube and when that happens belly blows up, no BM's for three days before finally producing something. Meanwhile really bad naseua ...  especially at night.

Did ANYONE  experience this and if so, how did you resolve it. I keep hoping my husband will be home for Fathers Day, at this point i don;t care what state he's in, only that he is home.

Unfortunately vomiting is one of the problems after surgery for the first 4 to 5 months I threw up epically in the beginning just after surgery, I was in the bathroom most of the day and had to carry a bucket with me every where I went, it was terrible and I thought it would never end, but it did and each day I did see an improvement. It is 10 months post op for me now and on occasion I still vomit and the last 3 days I have been experiencing the dumping syndrome which usually is not a problem for me but this week it has been for some reason, I'm wondering if the heat has anything to do with it. But I am sure things will get better for your dad. I too did not have stitches for my draining tube and it healed fine. Try not to worry to much, your dad is in good hands at the hospital and he will get better with time. This is a major operation worse then open heart surgery I am told, so take the time needed, but keep up the hope.

okay, that's my question, i read just about everyone is throwing up after surgery, some for a long period of time. I assume it is because of the geographically rearranged digestive system. Taking out the esophagus, a necessary part of the system obviously has life long implications afterwards, not to mention an altered state of whatever is left of your stomach. So HOW did you deal with this? What remedies were offered, or found by you? , or anyone else to control this problem. What set of the vomitting?

I have begun to research alkaline based diet since my husband also cannot taek for his own health Protonix twice a day for the rest of his life, its usually only prescribed daily. I read that diets in America are overly acidic with adds to this acid reflux problem. Those of us posting here have gone all the way on the acid reflux gig, all the way to cancer.

Rather than focus on the problems still being addressed I am trying to put my mind on the track of dietary or supplement alternative to help him.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

thanks so much. TrueBrit.

Well, unfortunately everyone deals with it differently. I tried to keep a record of what I ate and then stayed away from the foods that made me nausea, at first everything did. Our new digestive system takes some getting used to and yes there are life long changes. My doctor prescribed an anti nausea medicine which I took 1/2 hour before meals and at bedtime. It did help, I also avoided milk products as some people tend to get lactose intolerance after this surgery, I also had to watch the sugar as it caused nausea as well. It was a very bland diet I was on in the beginning, but slowly over time I re introduced a variety of foods, and things got better. I did find I had to eat very little very often, and if I over did it, I would vomit, as time goes you are able to eat more, but you must chew very well, eat slowly, and take sips of water. I do not belief we can every eat as much as we could before this operation, but yet I've read some like firechief, has no problems eating a good meal. I guess each individual is different, but keep in mind it does get better as time goes. Hope I've helped.

Hey, I am 7 months out and still on occasion throw up. It just started getting better for me. There was no special food that I ate that made me throw up. I could eat something one day and not the next. Only thing is Milk products can be a bit tricky. The best thing you can do for your husband is to be supportive and try not to freak out in front of him too much. He is going to feel crappy and really the only thing you can do is wait it out. It may feel like it will never get better, but it will. Heck, I am still not 100%. There is no way I could have gotten through this without the support of my husband. He still reminds me on bad days that I am doing better.
