RE: the effects of narcotics onpostoperative ileus after nephrectomy

Yes , it was pretty difficult. My doctor put me on a stool softner and iron pill. It worked. You will probably find yourself loosing your appetite for a while. I had a partial back in February and I am feeling pretty well now, Occasionally, I get a stinger in my side.I am not as strong but this past week end I mowed the lawn and washed 4 cars. Things will get better as you recover. Good luck for a quick effective recovery.

My Doc. had me on "stool softeners" right away in hospital so no probs with bowel movements. At check up he suggested I still use them to ease movements during the healing process. Gotta admit I am glad he did.

The simple answer is YES. This has never been an issue for me, and was following surgery (especially my first few days at home), possibly from my use of Tylenol 3s (at least that is what we call them in Canada). I went off of them and found myself feeling far better in this area.

Anyone else have immense pain waiting for your bowels to start working again after partial or full nephrectomy? I waited 5 days before having my first BM and that was with the help of enemas. Please be aware that most narcotics given for pain will slow the process down and actually give you more gas pains. If you can handle the pain without the use of narcotics do it! You'll leave the hospital a happier healthier person...perhaps even with some of your dignity still intact as well.God Bless and Good Luck!
