RE: How long do I have to wait before I can be sure there will be no leakage?

Frank,My husband never developed a leakage from his colon resection (he had cancer removed from the sigmoid and from the hepatic fissure, so he actually had two resections in one operation). So, though this is a problem, not everyone develops this complication. Also, much depends on the age and overall health going into this whole ordeal (i.e., how well you heal). Talk this over with your doctor as he should be able to give you a better idea, given that s/he likely has a better idea and more familiar with your overall health (and things like blood count) than anyone here. So, just take it one day at a time and stay in close touch with your doctor (also, don't lift anything heavier than say, 2 quarts of milk, for quiet a while). Good luck! Paula Jean

I don't know if there is a set time frame to prevent leakage from a colon resection. I developed leakage 10 days after my resection and the staples were the problem for me. The staples do disolve. I would consult with your surgeon they would be able to ease your fears. Leakage is common but not all patients develop this complication. Good luck.Sheryl

How long do I have to wait before I can be sure there will be no leakage?

In a few days it will be three weeks since my colon resection surgery to remove a tumor. How long do I have to wait before I can be sure there will be no leakage? I would hate to go through this surgery again because of leakage. Also, I’m not sure I understand the difference between sewing or using staples to reattach the colon after a resection. Which approach is the best for preventing leakage and if staples are used are they permanent or do they dissolve? Frank
