Thanks Tinman,

This had been very encouraging.  We have met with the doctor since I initially posted and we completely agree with your comment about them not being very concerned about side effects.  We are sending records to the Proton Therapy folks in Florida and we will go from there.

If you don't mind my asking, why were you not a candidate for Proton Beam at Loma Linda?  We have a friend whose father had it there and they can't say enough good things about it.  I think my husband would really like to hang onto his prostate if he can but I am so glad to hear from you that life without is pretty good too.

 Thanks,

  Anne

My husband is only 51 and has prostate cancer.  His PSA is 4.1 his Gleason is a 7 (3+4).  He does not want to be impotent or incontinent.  What should he do?  I have not seen anything on this site about Proton therapy any reason for that?

Hi Anne63

Iam 70 years old/young, and have had my psa tested regularly ,thanks to my very diligant GP from when I was aged 60. My psa rose slowly but steadily from 4.0 to 4.6 and at aged 68 my GP recommended a biopsy which showed no evidence of cancer, and all this time I had no urinary problems. Just short of my 70th birthday my psa had gone up to 5.1, and yes my diligant GP sent me for another biopsy which showed three areas of cancer which an MRI scan showed as enclosed within the Prostate gland. I did some internet research and from my results after biopsy, MRI etc, which were, PSA 5.1, Gleason 7.0, Cancer Stage 2, Prostate volume 34cc, with good urine retention and flow, asked my consultant for Brachytherapy treatment, which he agreed I was a good candidate for. Treatment was carried out at the Velindre hospital WALES UK in March 2009 and no discomfort was experienced during or after the procedure. My psa in June 2009 was 1.2 and my specialist was pleased with this, and I am thrilled. Further psa tests will continue periodically, and I remain very confident that my cancer will be beaten. To those whose results qualify them for Brachytherapy treatment, my suggestion would be GO FOR IT and be positive. Hope these few words will help others in their battle against this illness.

I'm a newbee.  You have encouraged me.  I just got diagnosed July 24, 2009.  I am 54.  Gleason was 6,7, & 8.  PSA is 2.4.   Had an MRI yesterday because they found something on my rib after the bone scan.  So, needless to say I can pretty much guess what they are going to tell me about whether it spread anywhere.  I am going to have the robotic surgery at Johns Hopkins.  I don't want to be impotent either but to be honest, I'd rather live to be a lot older.  I have read about the surgery and I am not worried.   I'm waiting for the doctor to call with the results of the MRI right now.  My doctor has moved very quickly.  I appreciate that.

Hi Lamar777, wellcome to the site, Gee psa of 2.4, that the lowest Ive read about so far. Was that psa of 2.4, befor you had the biopsy, and did it go up to the 4.1 ,after the biopsy,  I just want to let you know  be care full, I know no mater what treatment we have, The vey thing that give you the cancer in the first place ,is still there . Usuley a poor diet of proscess sugary food and a weaken immune system. to weak to fight our cancer  My naterpath told me, cancer loves carbs, so a low carb diet, no sugary food or drink, and high dose, of anti-oxidents, like Vitamin C, well help. vitamin C can and will slow cancer down alot.allthe best Ray

Hi

Do not give up hope

I was diagnosed in Aug 2006 aged 46 with a PSA of 4.7 Gleason 3+4

I had a Radical Prostectomy Jan 2007

My psa is now less than 0.1

i now have some mild stress incontinence  but i am still able ( with the help of drugs ) to get an erection.

speak to a good urologist if you still need more advice speak to the people at john hopkins.

do not put your faith in watch and waiting or any so called diets.

you can save your life at this stage. so do not lose hope.

i wish you and your family all the best and hope and pray that you come thru this.

yours

Murray
