HIFU Update

I am sending an update from my last PSA of June 9 at 0.08, and that my urologist considers as undetectable and a favorable prognostic finding.

I had my HIFU done in Munich (Germany) on March 2007, and have been very happy with the results

I am still under cancer watch awaiting another biopsy this year.  I would assume you were treated using the ablatherm method. Could you give me an estimate of the cost of procedure and the Doctor/Clinic?  I have located a good physican using the sonablate method, but i have read postings from some patients who believe the ablatherm method slightly better. Thanks in advance for any information.

My procedure was done at the

Stadtisches Klinikum Munchen Gmbhp.

p.    (089)62-10-27-91

Fax    (089)62-10-29-58

The head of the Urology Group is Prof. Christian Chaussy, and they have done more HIFU than most .

At the time over two years ago they had quoted me an all inclusive price equivalent to about 10,000 US, although I know they had a price increase since then and the Euro has gone up as well, and you have to consider flights, hotels, etc.I was at the Hospital 11 days because I did not want leave until they had removed the upper catether, and then a few days before and after.

Contact me if you need any aother info

Hi: I am 67 and was diagnosed with prostate cancer on february 20th of 2009.My twin brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 and chose radiation with seeds implants. He is cancer free but has ed,incontinence and blood in urine problems. After much research I have decided to have HIFU,clinical trial,at sloane-kettering memorial hospital in NYC. The procedure will be done on July 9th,2009.The attending physician is Dr. James Eastham, head of urology at sloane-kettering. Also Dr.William Orovan from HIFU-maple-leaf,Toronto<Canada will help with the HIFU-Ablatherm treatment.I am the first person to undergo this treatment at sloane-kettering.Early detection is the key too successful prostate cancer therapies.I feel that HIFU can and will be the best therapy for early stage prostate cancer.

HI,

I had HIFU with the doctor in the USA who has trained all the doctors in the clinical studies here.  He's been doing HIFU in Mexico and the Bahamas for 5-6 years.  He is Dr. Scionti, he also has a clinical trial going on in Charlotte, N. Carolina.  You can reach him at HIFUCareCenter, or InternationalHIFU.com  the trials are free, and going to Mexico or Nassau is $25,000.

You will still have a prostate gland ~ just no tissue in it, so a PSA under 1. is what you strive for, and then stability.  My PSA is 0.4

From my studies I would only go with the American made Sonablate, because it is able to treat a larger sized gland without a TURP, whereas the Albatherm has a pre-set size limit, under 25cc, or you need a TURP to reduce the size. With the Sonablate the doctor can see real time a 3-D image on the computer screen, so he can see what he is doing, and manipulate to what he sees, whereas the albatherm is pre-set.  Dr. Scionti told me that he couldn't see any cancer outside the gland, other-wise he would have cooked that as well.

I didn't need a TURP, thank goodness.  But the treatment was simple and I was going out on the town just a couple hours after the anethesia wore off.  You are only put to sleep so that you don't move.

I had no incontinence issues, clean sex is wonderful!

Thanks for your concern. I have done my research and feel that I have satisfied all the guidelines too ensure a successful HIFU-Albatherm procedure at sloane-kettering on July 9th, 2009. I have a pre-surgery appointment for July 1st, 2009. If there are any surprises I will find out then. Thank You for your concern. I have confidence that both HIFU-Sonablate and Albatherm will become the Gold standard  for localised prostate cancer in the near future.

No kidding, it will be The Treatment in the future, I just feel very sorry for the guys who don't know about the option of HIFU.

Dr. Scionti has worked with both machines, he just prefers the Sonablate because he can make sure all the gland is treated.  I went to Denver for the Albatherm trials and was turned away. My cancer was in the lower tip, it would have fallen outside the Albatherm scope.

I've sent several men in for HIFU and all come back amazed and grateful, no cutting, no discomfort, no worries, no hormones.  I hear of some bad stories on the web, but I wonder if they saw a doctor that wasn't too experienced, as in all things in life--experience counts.

My doctor in Denver who is doing the trials reports success, he used fancier words, but I got the picture!

So, join the list of HIFU happy customers!  Report back!

BTW, the phone number for the free trials or Dr. Scionti is 888-874-4384,  however I now understand that Dr. Scionti is not the doctor conducting the trials, it's someone who he trained.

Hi: There are numerous sites participating in the HIFU-Albatherm Clinical study in the USA. To be eligible for the HIFU Albatherm study you must have Localised Cancer,PSA under 10, Gleason score of 6 or lower,CT scan, and Bone scan must be negative. Also the size of the Prostate must be less that 3.0cc. There is also a clinical study of HIFU for those who have recurrent prostate cancer after radiation therapy. I am new too this game but I will try to keep all informed of my progress and hope that HIFU will live up too its billings. THE KEY IS EARLY DETECTION!!

There are also Sonablate HIFU clinical trials in the USA now.  There's no size restriction as the Sonablate ultra sound machine can be manipulated to the size of the gland, the doctor puts the probe in place and clamps it down, then uses a computer mouse to direct the beam.  If the gland spasms durning procedure then the doctor can adjust to the movement.

I tried to get into the Albatherm trials but was turned away, the gland couldn't be over 25cc.  I'm glad of that because my cncer was in the lower tip and there's a good chance the Albatherm would have missed the cancer.  I like knowing that the doctor can see what he is doing in real 3-D imaging.

Who is Eligible for HIFU Treatment? (outside USA) the clinical trials are very restrictive

1. Clinical stage T1-2N0M0

2. PSA less than 20 ng/ml

3. Any Gleason score

4. Prostate volumes of less than 40cc (patients with larger glands could consider neoadjuvant (pre HIFU) hormone therapy or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) prior to HIFU therapy to reduce the volume of the prostate.

5. Prostate glands without large calcifications of more than 1.0cm in diameter (TURP can be performed to remove these calcifications before HIFU).Who is Eligible for HIFU Treatment? (outside USA)
