I hear that this drug will help those in need of gaining weight. I am thinking about trying it. Has anyone had any experience with this drug?

Thanks

Hello:

My mother (stage III, ampullary cancer) tried Megace to stimulate appetite, and unfortunately, it doesn't work for her AND it is VERY expensive.  She is better with marijuana... However, her cancer is digestive in nature, so it might work for someone who doesn't have eating problems as a result of surgery.

However, she is starting an anti-depressant called Remron, or something like that.  One of its side effects is to stimulate appetite and cause weight gain. We'll take it!

Good luck!

the marijuana helps for me too....it helped with my apetite and the nausea that comes along with the ivor lewis.

that being said, i still can not seem to put the weight on.  i was gaining and now i seemed to have stopped and am holding steady at 97lbs.

i have come to conclusion that this might be my new weight and as long as i am healthy, i can't worry too much about it.

 i wish you well...God bless!

It is just a little too soon yet for you people.  I went shopping today to buy "bigger" clothes.  I can't believe it.  From skin and bones 5 years ago to purchasing size 16.   Guess I must be eating well......and often.

Barbara,

Your post made me feel better.  My husband is 15 months post surgery and almost a year post chemo and now weighs anywhere between 140-145 lb and he's 6 ft.  This last few weeks he's really been eating and also really active but in between there are the CAT scans and he's now going for this procedure called an intercostal nerve block where they shoot him up with steriods to deaden nerves to help with his post-surgical rib pain.  Both these procedures cause him to lose his appetite and to feel nautious.   As much as I would like him to gain weight (and he wants that too), as long as he's cancer free that's all that matters.   I can see a big difference in him when I look at picture that I took of him in Feb. and here it is June and he looks like his old self again  -- just a little light.

My Dad had advanced lung cancer and took Megace.  He passed away 10 years ago at the age of 78 yrs. old but from what I can remember, the Megace worked in the beginning but as the cancer progressed, it stopped working for him.

Maria.

I agree...at over three years out from surgery, with recurrences in between, my husband went higher than pre chemo weight, and the only time he ever weighed more was in first months after giving up cigarettes years ago...he ate instead.

We also tried megace during first round of chemo and radiation. He ate an unbelievable amount of food and started gaining back weight to go into surgery.
