I believe that early intervention with the Fentanyl patches is the best way.  I am a chicken when it comes to pain and suffering.  I was on multiple anti-nausea medications (at least two at any given moment) I sufferred little nausea as the result.  Cisplatin really makes people sick.  I also have ringing in the ear which is now permanent.  Low dose each week minimizes the Cisplatin side effects vs. three big doses.  I hade one big dose, then little ones.  My Fentanyl patch dosage never exceeded a single 25mg patch.  Others in treatment with me at the tomotherapy center all were between 100 and 200mg.  I went down to a 12mg patch within four weeks after treatment and stopped them within 6 weeks post treatment.  I did need to supplement the patches with dilauded 2mg at periods when the radiation pain bothered me and when I had sores in my mouth at the peak pain period 2 weeks after leaving treatment.  I never suffered any dependency issues.
