Meeting top surgeon to get Thyroid out!!!

Hello all,

I'm new to this site and posted a few other things while I was going through my tests to see if I had Thyroid cancer. I had a feeling all along it was Papillary cancer, mainly becase I had all the symptoms. It ends, up I was correct. My Dr. told me on Monday that it's indeed papillary cancer. He said this cancer is basically 100% cureable with someone my age (38). Everything he told me, I basically knew from my readings on the internet. 30 days after surgery I will need a full body scan and take the RAI pill and will have to stay away from my family for 5 days, which might actually be harder then having the surgery. Everything I read and what I've been told, this cancer shouldn't be too hard to overcome. I do get a little frustrated hearing. "this is the best cancer to have" and " this is easy to take care of". It's nice to hear in a way - but in another sense, it's still cancer and I'm still very concerned.

One thing which is good is that I'm meeting the top surgeon for throat and neck at Sloan Kettering in NYC. He worked on my father-in-law (throat cancer from smoking) 7 yrs ago and he's the Chief of the ENT dept for the hospital, which is either #1 or #2 in the country (depending on what you read). The ENT I saw in NJ is very good as well. He does 75 of these surgeries a yr and I feel confident in him, but since I have this connection with Dr. Shah in NYC, I figured why not see him instead. I see him June 21, so I think the surgery will be in Aug sometime.

Overall , I'm in very good spirits. For some reason I'm in better spirits then before I got the news because I really knew I had this and it was basically a relief once the Dr told me and told be it's very curable and that I will be ok. Hopefully I feel the same way when I meet Dr. Shah soon.

Take care everyone, I will talk to you all soon!

Sounds like you've got it all under control, way to go!

True, this is nearly always curable and is a great cancer to have,...and true, it is still cancer and it still sucks! I had my TT a year ago this week and it was a nuisance, but not a big deal. We all experience things differently though, and you may have some ups and downs, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I feel like I have a chronic illness with an acute flare up...takes a few months to get under control but once you get on your hormone dose and get that clean scan, then life goes on with no further thought.

As for staying away from your family, it is more a matter of keeping a distance, not isolation...but you will find that there seem to be many opinions about what is really necessary or not.

This is all very do-able, and it sounds like you've done your homework...and have a great attitude. Way to go!

It's actually Dr. Jatin Shah, not Sr. Shaha. Shah is the Chief of Hean and Neck. I'm Sure Shaha is great also as most if not all are at Sloan. Hope your doing well. I have my surgery this Mon. TT and some lymph node are going to be removed. I will prob staying in hosp for 3 days. take care
