Hello

Just learned I have low Vit D level of 8   (normal 20-40)

I also have MGUS  as of 2005.

Anyone hear of such a connection?

Dear NanLiz,

I was diagnosed first with breast cancer, second the low Vit D was found and then the docs who treated me for the breast cancer found MGUS and now it has gone into Myeloma. So yes but not sure mine took the same route as yours.  I have been very fortunate because the cancers I have had have been treatable. It now takes 8000 u of Vit D to keep my vit D at 42.  I hope they are planning on starting you on Vit D soon.. Gayle

Hi Nan Liz~~

I've had Myeloma for 6 years now and have only been told in the last 6 months that I am Vit D deficient!!  How this is possible because I try to go for a walk in the sunshine for at least a half hour everyday, I just don't understand, but the blood test doesn't lie.  I'm now reading that many people with MM have Vit. D deficiency!!  Perhaps it happens because we are all so careful about using 15+ sunscreen and staying out of the sun to avoid melanoma -- who knows??  So now I'm using liquid D -- three small drops on the back of my hand - which I lick off each day - equals 1000IU of D.  Very simple really, and I still go out in the sun each day basically because I enjoy it!!  Hope this helps, Cheers Cath in Australia

Hi, NanLiz.

As difficult as it is to believe, I have had osteoporosis for sometime, and the doctors have NEVER checked my Vitamin D.  I seriously doubt that I am a lone wolf in that regard.

Hi, Cath.

Even though I get bushels of HOT sunshine, I do not use sunscreen--but should.  Now I really do need to get my Vitamin D checked.  Perhaps the body does not absorb it properly when one has bad plasma cells.  There must be some explanation for that mystery.

Hi Nan -- Especially as so many of us with MM have the same problem!! It will be interesting to find out why and I'm sure that someone will follow it through and work it out!!  Cheers, Cath

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just sent Cath a note on vit. D deficiency. Not sure of everyone's age through-out board. However, I'm 39 and my vit D levels have been down for about 6-7 years. A simple blood test at my former GYN's office gave me a reading of 8. I was prescribed a supplement, but ofcourse not a good medicine taker, my levels have been up and down over the years, and then boom late last year diagnosed with the demon MM.

I tell you if some doctors would listen to their patients I'm sure they could figure how, what, and where with these diseases. It's ridiculous to hear so many people here may have a link to this cancer and low  vit D. I've re-ordered the supplement on my own, since I have a ongoing account with my doctors referral, and doctor on myself and trying to take it every other day, but too much vit D is not good either, but if your readings are a 8- that would little worry at these low levels.

Good luck to all on this one.

Hello,

I also have a vit D deficiency. I do believe there is a connection.  I take 1000 iu a day. Was told to take 2000 a day, but too much might give you kidney stones I heard. Does it have to do with the m-proteins?

Hi Majolica

I think there is some kind of link, but if physicians are not willing to listen further on this claim, I'm not even sure what else can be done.

This is why this whole cancer is such a headache to me... most doctors seem quick not to investigate further on these kinds of possible claims- even the specialized Dr's in this field.

Its rather chilling especially if we later find this can all be solved by increasing our Vit D levels period- even though I don't know how simple that would be at later stages.

Ugh!

Hi Majolica ~~

Like you my doctor told me today that I should increase my Vit D from 1000-IU to 2000-IU daily because even though I have been taking a suppliment for 3 months my reading is still too low.  When I asked why this relationship between low D and MM he said that it might have something to do with the fact that MM affects the kidney's and doesn't allow them to process Vit D properly so that even if you are eating all the right things and getting plenty of sunshine you can still have a low reading!  Sounds logical I suppose, but as I already have a history of kidney stones, I too, am afraid to go up to 2000!

So now he's ordered another full skeletal survey, a renal ultra sound, and another BMB (I only had one done two months ago!) -- but I certainly can't fault how careful he is.   Never mind, better safe than sorry, and if Vit D will make a difference then it is certainly a very small price to pay to improve the situation!!  Fingers crossed!! Cheeers, Cath
