Portacath removal

I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in January 2008, and have now completed my chemo treatment. I have been in remission for a year. My doctor has recommended that I have my port removed. However, I am scared because my doctor mentioned that he cannot guarantee that the cancer will not return. I am uncertain whether to remove the port or leave it in for a while. Please advice.

Thank you,

We have the same question.  My husband has Primary CNS-non-hodgkins lymphoma of the brain and he finished chemo (which failed) June 1, 2007.  Our neuro-oncologist has not mentioned removing it but we wonder how long he should keep it in.  We have it flushed at our local hospital every month and they say it is in excellent working condition.  My husband wants to leave it in as long as it remains in good condition.  We do worry about problems with it since it has been there for over 2 years. Our neuro also says that non-hodgkins tends to return.  But so far so good.

Good luck to you and stay strong.

Thank you for responding to my email. I have decided to get my port removed. My appointment is on July 17th. I wish you the best with your husband health.
