Hi,

My father has been ill with pain for 3 months now and lost 3 stone in weight maybe more, hed had a urinary tract scan, blood tests, colonoscopy, then a cat scan.

Last week Monday he was finally diagnosed with advanced stomach cancer which has spread to the liver and the chest, maybe also the bones we will get those results tomorrow.

He hs now developed breathing difficulties which the hospital are treating as pneumonia, hes on morphine tablets (zormorph i think) and a drip with pain relief and fluids and on oxygen.

Could somebody please advise me how long the final stages may be is it very very soon?

This is the most difficult time in my 42 years of life i em grieving already for something that hasnt happened, my chest feels tighter everday. Im not sure how to cope with this. I also live 300 mile away from my parents and the rest of my family, have been twice in 2 weeks to see them.

Any words of wisdom from anyone to help me get through this would be great.

Thanks

I am so sorry to hear about your father.   I really don't believe that anyone can tell someone how long they have.  No one really knows.  It's only a best guess based on experience and past knowledge.

You need to take care of you during this difficult time.  Make sure you eat even if small snacks during the day. Get rest.  Take deep breaths.  I know all that sounds trivial but during a time like this you can forget to do those things as you are so consumed with grief and anxiety.

Can you get to your family?  If there is any way you can get to them to be with them I highly recommend doing so.   Support and comfort one another.  Make sure you have a support system even if it is just one close friend who can help you, listen to you, let you cry on their shoulder.

I can relate to what you are feeling. I lost my sister on May 24 of this year to stomach cancer and it was and is the hardest thing I have and am going through.  I still do not believe it has happened.  I was grieving also before she even passed away.  It is hard not to imagine the worse.  However, miracles do happen....  hope can do wonders and keep a person going much longer than anyone can imagine.

I hope that things turn around for your father.  Please get to him if you can. You will want to be there during this time.

Tracy
