Sick after eating...

Hey everyone,  my Dad is doing pretty well (scans a month ago aren't picking up any cancer...we know there is some still there but the chemo is working so it's good news).  He is on CPT-11 and Avastin every week for three weeks with one week off.  He has his 9th treatment Wednesday.  (he also had 13 of FOLFOX with Avastin before that eventually stopped working).  My question is, why is he getting SO sick after he eats like clockwork?  He can have a couple of crackers or a full meal and it doesn't matter he has to immediately go lie down.  He doesn't have pain after he eats, but explains it like extreme nasuea with a feeling like there isn't enough room in his stomach for food (that uncomfortable sick feeling).  His stomach isn't distended at all so it all seems weird.  Also, it's not WHAT he eats, he eats bland foods and no matter what it is he's very sick and has to lie down.  Also, the last two days he's sleeping through the night, gets up for an hour or two and then spends from around noon through to the evening asleep.  He's not sure what is going on.  He isn't on new medication but things seem worse lately.  If anyone has an idea what could be causing this I would really appreciate it.  Thanks everyone,  High Strung Daughter

HI,

Chemo can cause a lot of sicknes, and also sounds like your Dad has chronic fatique, call his oncologist as soon as you can and explain to them the situation.  For fatique he can get a B12  shot which will do him good and also  get him some B complex vits .... will help him.. his oncologist can prescribe  medication for sickness...

Always be proactive .... and keep going ..

                  Best Wishes  Rob and Barb

My Dad had/has this... but he also has spread to his abdomen...however this was caused originally by his stomach not emptying fast enough... they prescribed Reglan and it worked for a while... now though he can't eat at all and is on IV feeding nightly to maintain... They can do a stomach emptying test to see if that is the case for you and if so the Reglan will help!  Good luck!

We had dad's appointment today and met with his oncologist (not his normal doctor as he was out sick today).  My parents explained to the doctor how much my Dad has been sleeping and my Dad did a good job conveying how tired he has been to the doctor.  We asked him about giving Dad a shot of B-12 before his treatments today and he said it wouldn't do him any good.  He said he's not deficient in it and his bloodwork all looks normal so he said that it wouldn't benefit him at all.  Thanks for the suggestion though, it was worth trying.  He's just so frustrated with the fact that he can barely wake up during the day and there is nothing they can do?!  My Mom couldnt' get him out of bed before noon yesterday, he work up for 30 minutes, and then went back to bed until 5:30 last night.  He was awake a total of about 5 hours yesterday.  I'm just so frustrated that there is nothing they can do.
