Does anyone here understand my PET Scan Results?

I have already been diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and the preliminary staging was 1B2 before my MRI, CT and PET Scan.  I don't have another Dr. appt for three weeks because I am being seen at a Clinic..  However, I was able to get a copy of my PET Scan results.  If anyone could help me to understand them I would really appreciate it.  I am mainly trying to figure out if the Cancer is confined to my cervix or has spread to any other areas.  I don't understand the PET Scan results however my bladder and colon are mentioned so I am curious as to whether I have Cancer there as well.

Here are my PET Scan Results:

Findings:  No prior PET Scans are presently available for comparison.  There is increased activity in the region of the lower uterine segment/cervix.  In addition, there is soft tissue thickening and prominence in this region.  This is particularly evident anterior, where it slightly indents the urinary bladder.  The maximum SUV in the region is 12.2.  The overall area of soft tissue prominence is approximately 4.5 x 4.0 cm in greatest axial dimensions.  The fat plane between the urinary bladder and lower uterine segment is not evident on the CT images.

No other hypermetabolic soft tissue masses are identified throughout the remainder of the exam.  No iliac or inguinal lymphadenopathy is seen by size criteria.  Diverticula are noted along the left colon.

I'm sorry you are going through this. If you don't get an answer, there is a yahoo group called gyn_gals. There are a lot of women on that sight who have been going through the same thing. I know they would be willing to help you with answers.

I'm not a physician but have had several PET scans and am getting good at reading them.  My read of your results is that you only have the one area of cancer at the cervix and it states the size and that it may be pushing into the bladder.

The comment about your colon has nothing to do with the cancer.  Diverticula are "pouches" along the colon.  It specifically states finding no other "hypermetabolic" areas.  Cancer glows on PET scans because it takes up the radioactive glucose that you're injected with quicker than other tissues in the body.  This is because cancer by nature divides and spreads quickly and uncontrollably - this is what "hypermetabolic" means.  Since it's metabolizing (or using) glucose to grow and divide quicker than the rest of your body, it ends up glowing on the scan.
