Ablation therapy

I was wondering how many people had radiation ablation therapy and if they did after thyroid removal.....when did re-start their thyroid medication? Some say right after taking the radiation pill before the body scan and some say about a week after the ablation radiation pill.  My doctor wants me to wait a week after the ablation pill...but I say..that's too long to be without thyroid medication i.e. because of the RAI diet being so long before the actual

ablation pill is taken and then I have to wait 11 days before the body scan.

Thanks guys.

First of all almost everyone has ablation (RAI-131) after TT.  Not everyone goes through hypo hell though. I did thyrogen as many do now; no need to go off of meds.  You didn't mention the LID diet, but you're usually on that for at least 14 days before you start the treatment.

If you go hypo, I've read both; start back on the pills right after you take the RAI pill and others wait until after the WBS.  Now I'm not sure why you're waiting 11 days.  Almost all of us do/did the following:

Shots on Monday and Tuesday, or of course go hypo about 3-4 weeks prior to treatment if that's the way you go.  RAI pill on Wednesday.  Isolation for 72 hours or more dependent on the strength of the RAI.  WBS the following Wednesday.  Off of diet and life goes on except you'll lose your taste buds right when it's time to eat normally again! ;D

Someone who went hypo may tell you differently.  Good luck!

Hi! I am in the same boat. I was on the RAI diet for 14 days, had my I-131 in the hospital and went back on my Synthroid I belive the same day, if not the next day. I did go back on regular diet the same day, as I took my I-131. I do remember that because I couldn't wait to eat regular food. I also took Cytomel for 2 weeks as well to get a good jump start on the TSH at the same time. I started feeling better right away.  I cannot imagine not starting some sort of thyroid med righnt away after being off for so long. I would double check with the Doctor.  Hope all goes well!!

I also lost my taste buds one week after RAI.  it lasted for 6 weeks.  6 months later I too had the salivary gland/parotid gland issue.  Of course it was diagnosed as TMJ but I knew better.  That lasted for about 6 months.  I was isolated at home for 72 hours.  I had 100mci of RAI-131.

4 times is a lot.  You may want to get a second opinion.  I am going to go in for my second round because my TG # is way too high; 57.  I've had scans, ultrasounds, and ct scans which were all negative; thank god.  But there have to be some cells somewhere.  so I'm going into ablate once again.

I have heard of different types of radiation when RAI doesn't work but not chemo.

Best of luck!
