I have been informed by my Dr. that the only treatment for renal cell is surgery. Is this the general diagnosis, or are there other treatments out there which are considered successful. What about the Nexavar, which has just been approved by the government. It was developed by Bayer and Onyx Pharmaceuticals, per newspaper article in St. Louis Post Dispatch 12/21/05.

Surgery is almost always the best option for renal cell cancer, but it is not the only option. If the tumor has not spread beyond the kidney, surgery is by far the best option. It is true that renal cell cancer is notoriously resistent to conventional chemo and radiation but treatments are available. If the tumor has spread beyond the kidney, treatment options also include interleukin-2, interferon and Nexavar, stereotactic radiosurgery, and promising investigational drugs such as Sutent. There is an email support list for kidney cancer. Join Kidney-Onc at http://cancerguide.org/kofaq/.

First, I am not a doctor but I am a renal cell carcenoma participant and have asked a lot of questions over the past year. Secondly, my experience says that Trishpm gave you alot of good advice and alternatives. Evidently she is in the medical field or has first hand experience. You can find my story on the message board under the topic "Success Stories" signed as Bunker. I would take the time to re-type my message but I am at work. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. My wife and I feel we have been extremely lucky and want to help others if possible.

Thanks to Trishpm for advice. I did have another tumor in the pelvic area, which was also cancerous, but it was frozen laproscopily. The biopsy on the kidney tumor showed it as malignant, along with 4 small places in the lymph glands in the same area. The dr.s are taking a wait and see with cat scans planned every three months. Right now I am waiting to hear the results of a skin biopsy, whether it is a melanoma. Bebetty10

I can only say to you....get another opinion, please. Have frequent MRI scans or cat scans. Surgery is not the ONLY answer. Keep searching and take control of your own body. Doctors are human like the rest of us and make mistakes. There is so much information out there to keep you on top of treaments. I hope and pray there is a cure for this insidious disease soon. It is happening now with ovarian cancer. Until there is a cure, there are many ways to extend your life. Not everybody can tolerate all the treatments. Unfortunately you have to decide for yourself witht he assistance of your physician. I wish you the best of all good things. Sallydee

Thanks for the message, I am waiting to find out the result of a skin melanoma also, and am told it has nothing to do with the kidney cancer. Is it usual to have several different kinds of cancer at the same time? I also have a basal cell on my back.
