I am 4 months out from radiation treatment of thehead and neck and luckily my taste buds have returned and I am able to swallow fairly well as long as there is a bottle of water next to me. I lost about 40 lbs and need to gain more weight. I eat a lot of ice cream and i still love sweets. Is it wrong to eat some sugar items(ice cream, sweet cereal, candy ) so I can get the calories? I read that the cancer loves sugar but this is the only way I know to get the calories. salad and vegetbles I can eat but doesnt make since. those are things people want to eat to lose weight not gain. What are your thoughts?

Tom,

Sugar provides fuel for all types of the body's cells, including cancer cells. Our bodies need glucose, the broken down form of sugar, for energy. Even if you cut out every bit of sugar from your diet, your body will make sugar from other sources, like protein and fat. This is a confusing subject, but one of my esteemed colleagues has put together a well referenced article on the subject at this link.

Bottom line: Carbohydrates and sugars are OK in moderation. Attention should instead be paid to avoiding insulin spikes.

 I hope this helps.

A proper diet and only the food amount might help you when you are in the stage of healing. Just follow what the doctor will tell you what should you eat. The thing is the determination and knowing what you need.
