We are seeking treatment options. My husband completed 7 weeks of once per week infusion of Gemzar, had a 2 week break, completed 2 3 week cycles and developed severe reactions. His red blood count was way down and he required several transfusions, he swelled up ( about 40 lbs of fluid , was unable to do anything for himself and had 2 hospitalizations for breathing difficulties relatd to fluid. It was a complete medical nightmare. He now is off Gemzar and improving. Doc. wants him to get well before more chemo. Since so little is understood about carcinoma of the vater and his reaction to Gemzar quite rare,we are quite concerned about the next step. Thought we'd see if anyone has had a similar experience, any thoughts or input would be welcome.This is a lonely place to be. We feel good about our onc. but he only sees about one case of this cancer per year. He is considered a top doc in our area.
