SHas anyone had stents used to close a leak from the surgery?

Has anyone had to have stents inserted after an esophagectomy?  Almost 6 weeks ago my husband had the surgery and when they did the first swallow test, they found leakage.  They had hoped the hole would close on its own with time,  They did a second swallow test and the same thing - it had not closed.  Other than that my husband has been doing well and looking so forward to coming home.  Today we got some very disappointing news from the surgeon and he was also disappointed. They did a scope and found the hole not to be small, but massive.  He also found some areas that had fused to his lungs and walled in and he knew he would have a hard time getting stents in.  A Radiologist then was able to insert a guide wire so now he will be able to do the stent surgery tomorrow.  He is not sure if it will heal the problem, and if so, he does not know how long it will work.  If this does not work the only alternative are two very serious surgeries similar to the esophagectomy which he does not want to put him through.  If anyone has had any similar complications, please let me know.
