The problems with the HIFU-Ablatherm or Sonablate treatment is ( I found out the hard way after paying the Doctor consolation  fees). I live in Australia and ,HIFU-Ablatherm or Sonablate cost around $20,000.00, But Medical insurance in Australia wont pay for HIFU-Ablatherm or Sonablate. treatment  because HIFU-Ablatherm or Sonablate have no provider number who has $20,000.00 siting around

Hi: I am fortunate that I am in a clinical study and there are very few fees that I have to pay. If I had too pay for HIFU, then my other choice would have been radiation therapy. I consider myself to be fortunate and lucky!! to be at the right place at the right time.

Heck, insurance won't pay for it because the Medical Association doesn't want the word out on HIFU, the Medical Association runs insurance companies, they tell them what to approve and not to.  HIFU would be too cheap, doctors and hospitals would lose tons of $$.

ohnoo,

I understand the reasoning behind your post (that the Medical community wants to offer products that will bring the most bucks). However, cryosurgey, which most plans do cover now is priced similarly to HIFU (maybe a couple thousand more). The thing with HIFU is that it hasn't got a clear-cut "road" record yet. Cryosurgery for many years was not covered becuase of the same reason.

Wellll.....but there are tens of thousands of guys out there who have had HIFU, there are records, it's just that we are so high and mighty over here we won't look at any other country's records.  However--if it's a drug, we'll approve it right away, and then recall it when people die.  With HIFU, no one dies, and if it doesn't get all the cancer then they can do it again and again or do surgery or radiation.

I know 8 guys in the UK who are just fine 8 years after HIFU, no recurrance.

Doctors don't mention cryosurgery either.

I am 71, having stage-1 Prostate Cancer. I am interested to learn more about pros and cons of

Ablatherm  v/s Sonablate HFU
therapies. Leads to any independent studies comparing the two are solicited.

I had HIFU-Ablatherm performed at Sloane-Kettering in NYC on July 9th, I am more than happy with my progress. I suggest that you do your own research to determine which form of HIFU is best for you. There are numerous sites in the U.S. for  Localised Prostate Cancer Clinical Study with HIFU-Ablatherm. Good Luck!! I will be glad too answer all of your questions to the best of my ability

Thanks a lot for your prompt response.A few questions:1) How long was your Hospital stay?  2) How long did you have to go with the catheter? 3) What was the overall cost of treatment?
