Dad has Pneumonia

From Anna,

Hi all, Monday Dad started out with sinus infection.  I didn't know it then.  I knew Wednesday evening he didn't feel well.  Friday he got blood and that gave him some energy so when he got home he worked in the yard.  By Friday night he was feeling worse.  Yesterday even worse.  Last night he had a temp of 101 something.  Mom said something about it maybe being pneumonia at supper.  He said he didn't.  But with the temp he went to a weekend clinic at the GP's office and the Dr. there said he had fluid in his right lung and his white count was high.  He had to go have some blood work done.  He came home to eat then went back to see what the Dr. said.  He did tell him he might want to call his cancer Dr. and put off starting chemo again till he feels better.  So for you knew people this is how fast pneuomia can come on when the immune system is not good.  Of course he didn't mention the possible infection to his cancer Dr. Thursday or the nurse Friday when he went back to get red blood.

Your friend,

Anna

I'm sorry to hear the news Anna.  Hopefully he's taking an antibiotic  now and will kick that infection to the curb soonest.

Since my immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG....) are basically zero, I can count on an infection each time I get a cold or some kind of sinus issue.  Because of that, I start levaquin as soon as symptoms set in....works every time

Wishing you and Dad the best

Doug

From Anna,

Hi Gayle, He had some here. He thought they were to old but the Dr. said they weren't.  The nurse there is making him an appointment to see our GP tomorrow. Our GP is a little afraid to treat him because of his cancer but he can't go to his cancer Dr. for everything.

Your friend,

Anna

Anna,

The old antibiotics may not be the correct kind or dosage, let them prescribe new ones.  You need to kick the pneumonia in the butt..

Hi Anna,

I'm sorry your dad is sick.  I will keep him in my prayers for a speedy recovery.

My GP does not want to see me because of my cancer.  He doesn't want to make the wrong decision when it comes to treatments for infections.  So I do go to my oncologist for just about everything.  The oncologist knows how much antibiotics we need and usually check for infection faster than the GP.  The oncologist needs to know if someone is getting a lot of colds or whatever.  Lots of times I will just leave a message for the onc.

Just my 2 cents.

Take care,

Lois

Hi, Anna

I'm so sorry your dad is sick.  I do what Doug does. When I feel a respiratory infection coming, I start the Levaquin. All my drs. agree that's the best thing for me. It takes care of the infections very well.

Your dad has shown how strong he is, so if he gets on the right antibiotics, it should help him a lot. Good luck to you and your family!

Hi Anna~` So sorry to hear that your dad is battling pneumonia -- I hope he now has some strong antibiotics.  The last time I had pneumonia I had to be hospitalised and it took three lots of IV antibiotics to knock it on the head all because my own resistance no longer works.  It really matters, as you well know, that MM'ers get immediate treatment for this sort of infection.  Some of the other posters have mentioned that they immediately start taking levaquin -- something I haven't heard of, but will certainly look into.  I tend to keep one prescription of antibiotic on the shelf -- Keflex -- to have just in case I come down with something on a Friday evening when I can't get to my doctor for a couple of days.  I don't know about you, but going to the emergency room at the hospital means sitting there for up to 10 hours because they use a triage system and an infection doesn't rate against heart attacks, breathing difficulties, etc.  So, it just pays to keep at least one prescription on hand at all times.  Enough said -- I do pray that your dad's antibiotic has started working and that he is feeling better.  Your dad is an icon on this board and we all wish him all the best.  Do keep us up to date on his progress and give him our warmest wishes for a speedy recovery. Look after yourself as well -- you two are an awesome team!!  Via con dios. Cath
