Nausea in the morning following EC surgery

My husband has nausea every morning which makes it hard for him to get out of bed in the morning.  He has the bed elevated and sleeps on a slope with a few pillows.   He also sits upright in his recliner several hours after he eats his last meal before he goes to sleep at night.  Has anyone had any success with eliminating or reducing nausea, either through diet, drugs, whatever?

Hi Maria,

I am sorry, your husband is having a tough time in the mornings....for me it is the opposite...i am fine until i have something to eat.  once, i eat it is all over.  of course, at this point the nausea is mild, but it is still there and there are certain times where it is unbearable and i need to lay down for a bit.  when we were on vacation a couple of weeks ago, things got so frustrating!  everytime i ate...no matter what i ate, i got sick and had to take 20 minutes to myself to allow the 'bad feeling' to pass.  it can be so discouraging at times and it can certain bring you down.  i wish i had an answer for you, but i don't....all i can say is, tell Joe to hang in there and let him know we are all here for him in case his misery needs some company. ; )

 hope you are well!

 God bless!  talk soon!

Hi Stacey,

Joe was so disappointed this morning when he woke up nauseous again.  I could just see it all over his face so I offered to send an e-mail to the group.

As you know, we are leaving for a 5-day cruise to Bermuda this Saturday and I'm hoping that with all the food, he will be ok and even put on some weight.  However, he's a "dancing man" and already warned me yesterday that he's going to be dancing every night so I just hope he can maintain what he's got.

Maria:

It is almost 1 year since my surgery and some mornings I still have nausea as well. I do find it all depends on what I have eaten the night before and also how much and how close to bed. For some if they eat after 5PM they have problems, I am fine upto about 7PM, 3 hours before bed, however cheese and crackers I can eat until 5 minutes before bed and I am fine. I think as time goes it does get better, I very seldom have nausea now and I've learnt to keep track of my eating and how much and it has helped alot. I have a 12" wedge with 2 pillows ontop and that is good for me. Wish I could help more, and have fun on your trip.

Thanks Evelyn.   This is very helpful information.   My husband knew that he wasn't suppose to go to bed a few hours after eating but I think he hasn't been following this so closely or maybe he just needs more time after he last eats and when he goes to bed.   It seemed like a few months ago he was having less of a problem in the morning but it could have been that he just allowed himself more time at night after he ate and before he went to bed.  When he has the nausea when he wakes up, he tends to eat very little, if any, breakfast. I think it's a really good idea that you keep track of everything and this is something we need to do.  We will try your suggestions -- he has everything to gain.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting away.  It's been 2 years since we had a real vacation.

I had surgery in November. My Dr. gave me Zophran and that works great. It takes away the nausea in about 1 minute. Good luck and God bless

Thanks for your response.   I know my husband has tried several medications but I'm not sure if this is one of them.  I will check with him.  God bless you, too.

hey there...zofran is very common...i was given it during my chemo treatments, but did not take it because it caused me to get very dizzy.  however, i know many people who swear by it..and it can't be bad because i have a friend who was given it for her morning sickness during pregnancy.

another thing...i also find that if i do not eat for a long period of time, i will also get nauseaous....dammed if you do, dammed if you don't!!  LOL  it doesn't happen to me in the mornings, but i was never one to eat in the morning anyway.  but, i do notice it through out the day...i have to keep little snacks handy.  as far as eating at night, i was very paranoid about it at first.  i have always been the kind of person who needed a snack before bed and it was killing me that i couldn't do it after my surgery.  needless to say, eventually i broke the rules and endulged anyway....so far so good as long as i do not have too much.

as far as the cruise, i don't blame you for being nervous...but, do not stress it.  take each day as it comes!  and since your hubby is a dancing man, things should be fine...after he eats he can help digest his food by shakin what his mamma gave him and hopefully it will lessen the nausea!  i know the more active i am after i eat the better off i am!

i am sure i will talk to you prior to your leaving, but just in case....i wish you both a wonderful trip!

Does he go too long without food? Pat was so empty from eating early to be able to lay down later, that he was ravenous and nauseus by morning. His regimen for many months now has been a peeled apple a while before bed, and he gets uo very early for cream of wheat then sleeps in his recliner till he wakes and eats a real breakfast (some variation on eggs). His gut would start gurgling really early in the am, and if he didn't get up it would progress to a gross stomach. He hated getting up that early, but felt better and got used to going back to sleep right after he ate. It made a huge difference for him.

Yes, I know he's being guilty of going for long periods of time without eating when he gets busy working.  He's done this for years prior to surgery and now I frequently have to remind him to eat small snacks in between meals.  I try to prepare snacks ahead of time to give him no excuses.   Thanks.
