Treatments for elderly

My father has been diagnosed with Esophogeal cancer. It has not spread and is not operable. He is 90 but is generally in good health. Has anyone had experience with an elderly person having radiation or chemo vs. doing nothing? I want to be a good advocate and not have him dismissed because of ageism but I also know treatment is rough. Thanks for any input.

My brother in law's grandpa was 79 when he was dx with EC. He only did radiation and he is 85 now staying healthy.

Just remembered this: My friend's husband is a radiation oncologist. When I asked him questions about the treatment options for my mom, he did mention that he was treating a 90 year old lady with combined chemo and radiation, and it was working well on her.

My mother is 85 and has squamous cell esophageal cancer.  The referring doctor said the treatment would be radiation, not surgery, but the cancer centre has not yet met with her to discuss treatment.  The biopsy was sent to the centre 2 weeks ago, and they won't see her until next week.  There was no evidence of cancer elsewhere, through scope test and CT scan.   I am not sure whether to wait to see the local doctor or if it is useful to try to find another centre....given her age, and perhaps some prejudice against treating elderly patients.  Up until July, she was quite active, walking miles in June while on vacation.  Now she is only "eating" Ensure type drinks and therefore losing weight and feeling very tired.

I will pray for the best for all of you, and hope to hear encouraging updates from you all.
