Can anybody please advise on where to go for help.  My mom has no insurance and apparently won't qualify for medicare, she is 61.  She does receive social security from my deceased father, she would qualify for disability but apparently would have to recieve payments for 25 months before getting medicare.  Are there any other options or is she just supposed to die without any care or treatments.  Sorry for that, this is one of those rough days, and I have no idea where to look.  Thank you for any advise.

I would advise looking into a clinical trial.  My mom had insurance which covered her initial treatment. But when she entered a clinical trial, they paid for everything for that particular trial.  If she lives close to a place like NCI in Bethesda, MD that would be a good place to start.  Go to clinicaltrials.gov and see what she would qualify for.

Did the cancer cause your mom not able to care all for herself?  If she needs you to care for her, then I believe she qualifies for state disability insurance - in CA, they call medical / medicaid.  Call state health dept to ask them if they could guide you to the right department.  There should be a low income med insurance avail too (MSI ?)

Clinical trials sometimes r hard to get in based on how they review your mom health record.

Best wishes,

V

Hi Smcminn37 sorry for whay you and your Mum are going though I've been down this path before. Because I live in Australia. My problem was, in 2007, my insurance would only pay for half the care, I needed. The rest would have to come out of my own pocket. But I didn't have the $20,000.00 to spear. So I ended up seeing a Naturopath, who really did help me. She just told me to avoid sugary foods and drinks try and go on a low carbohydrate diet, and vitamin C If you dont mine me asking! What sort of cancer dos your mum have? I found out in 2007 with my cancer that some cancers you can realy slow it down with a high dose of vitamin C. It may work until she can find treatment (depending on the cancer,) some were. I was only on six grams a day of vitamin C It realy helped me. I just got from the vitamin C from the local chemist. See the links. Take care, be well and God bless Ray

If it is her first line of treatment, she won't have any trouble getting into a clinical trial.  It is the 3rd and 4th line of treatments that impose many more restrictions.  And in a first line clinical trial, they would use the standard protocol of treatment plus an additional agent that they are hoping would add to the impact on the cancer.  Good luck with your searching.

Go to the web site www.patientresource.net they put out a book called Cancer Guide.  It's a treatment and facilities guide for patients and their families.  They have a list of resources.

Many times your Doctor and/or Hospital can refer you to someone that specializes in this and direct you to help.
