Bone Marrow Biopsy - Sternum or Pelvis?

Where do you get your BMB done - sternum or pelvis? I got my first done through the sternum, and it wasn't bad at all apart from the jolt caused by the aspiration. My doctor said all future BMBs could be done through the sternum.

Are there MM cases where it must be done through the pelvis?

Paul

Hi Paul~~

I've had about 10 BMB's over the past 6 years and all of them have been in my hips.  They tend to alternate sides each time - by referring to my previous notes.  The first one was done cold turkey, but all the others have been done with a light anesthetic.  Apart from a bit of slight residual soreness for a day or two its easy and I'm back doing my daily routines within an hour of having the BMB done.  Don't worry Paul -- its not such a traumatic procedure and it certainly gives the doctors the information that they need to make sure that you are given the right meds. Best wishes, Cath

From Anna,

Hi Paul, Welcome to the group.  I think they do Dad's in his hip.  Its been so long since he had one I don't really remember. That sounds right though.

Your friend,

Anna

Good Evening Paul;

Where do you get your BMB done - sternum or pelvis?

All of mine have been in the back of my hip. I also alternate sides.

I believe reading here that someone had one taken from their skull.

Take care;

Kevin

i have had 3 BMBX in the last 11 months, all in the pelvic.  They alturnate sides.  I believe they do it there bacause thats where they find the most bone marrow.  I've never had anything for pain when he does it and it is not that bad.
