Positive Margins After Conization

Hi all,
I was diagnosed with carcinoma in situ (cervical) June 2009. I just had a cone biopsy three weeks ago but did not get clear margins. My oncologist wants me to come back in four months for a colposopy and another set of biopsies. He is talking about another cone biospy but I said if he has to put me under anesthesia again I just assume he do a hysterectomy which he did not seem too happy about since I have not had any children. I am 39 years old and decided a long time ago I did not want children.

Has anyone else out there had positive margins after a cone? What was the outcome? Did it clear on its own or was further surgery needed?
What about hysterectomy for carcinoma in situ?

I would love to hear from you PLEASE.

I had the same results, carcinoma insitu beyond the margins after a conization. My OB/GYN gave me two options, have the CKC again or be conservative and follow up with colposcopies and ECCs every 3 months. I then went and saw a gyn oncologists for a second opinion. He said if I was his daughter he would tell me to follow up with colposcopies and just monitor it because I am only 27, would like to have children, and I'm in other wise good health and shape so my body could fight it off on its own.

I know my circumstances are a little different because my steps are directed towards having children but just wanted to let you know I'm going through the same thing! I have my follow up colposcopy in October and will give an update after that.

 Good luck!

Hi JennyLynn,

Thanks for your post. I am curious if your doctor mentioned a possible hysterectomy in your future? Are you seeing an oncologist? I would love it if you would keep me posted on your progress. I have to wait until Dec for my next round of biospies. I think the waiting is worst part of all this.

yes, I did go see a gynocologic oncologist and will do my follow up colposcopies with him. He did not mention a hysterectomy at all. He didn't even want to do another conization because of my plans to have children in the future. He told me we should basically just take this 3 months at a time and monitor it for now. Not to get ahead of myself and do anything drastic or unneccesary.

I will keep you updated after my colposcopy in October. Waiting is the hardest part and before I saw the gyn oncologist I was 95% sure I wanted to just have another conization to get it all over with. I'm glad I went to him though because he reassured me that this is a slow growing disease and since I'm young, caught it now, and in good health that my immune system could very well take care of the rest of it on its own. I hope this helps and I wish you the best! I'll post an update in October :-)

Labrat,

Just following up on my other posts. I went back to my gyn oncolgists last week. He said it appears I still have some dysplasia and took another sample to biopsy. He also saw a polyp on my cervix that might need to be cut out, depending on the results of the biopsy. He said it appeared to be mild at most and he would make suggestions when the results of the biopsy comes in. The good news was he said my cervix looks plentiful and if another CKC is recommended he feels comfortable w/ my chances of the cervix healing normally and carrying a child full term. I'll let you know more when I receive my results in two weeks.

I hope you are doing well and please feel free to ask me any questions you may have about what we are going through. Hopefully I can help!
