My brother was diangosed with rectal cancer on Monday.  He went for a scan on Wednesday and we heard today that he has fluid built up on his stomach.  Can anyone tell me what this means?  We will have our first appointment with the cancer doctor tomorrow.

I'm not sure that this is the same thing or the info you are looking for, but I had fluid in my abdomen that had to be drained because BC had metasticized and attacked my liver and it was malfunctioning. Hope someone is able to give you a better answer. Hope all goes well at the doctor's office tomorrow...

Obviously no one on this board can tell you, with complete confidence what this means, however, usually when a patient has ascites, or fluid buildup in the abdomen, it indicates that the tumor has metastasized and (a) has compromised the liver to the point where fuild build up has occured or (b) peritoneal mets are causing the fluid buildup.  Your doctor will have to do further studies to ascertain the cause of it and when the fluid is tapped, pathology tests will be run on it to see if it is cancerous.
