Just started chemo 2 weeks ago . Adriamycin and Cytoxin. Did fine for the first 12 hrs then all hell broke loose. vomiting and diarrhea every 30-45 min.
12 hrs later at the oncologist's getting fluids and antinausea meds to no avail.
admitted to hospital and after a total of 22 hrs. i finally stopped vomiting.
all together i had:
IV fluids with kcl
Pepcid
Protonix
Compazine
Inapsine
Ativan

and was able to be discharged the next afternoon, however about 12 hrs later nausea and vomiting started again, however not as badly. Dr started ordering home meds for me which my daughter gave.
However a dear friend came by and insisted i try some marijuana. took 2 puffs and it was like someone TURNED OFF THAT DAMN NAUSEAU SWITCH!
I'm now taking ativan 4x day, Protonix, daily and only have an occasional wave of nauseau.

Is this the norm to be expected every time i take a treatment. or did i or my doctor miss giving me something to prevent this hell i just went through. Will it get better or easier?
I just don't know if I can do it again.

Please advise. I'm desperate.

Hope your friend keeps stopping by. Been where you are, nothing worked to stop the sickness, cept time, then it was time to do it again.mentioned it to the doc, he informed me it was illegal, to which i responded, "it ought to be illegal to leave a human being in that condition." we have cancer, we gotta do what we gotta do. Good luck

Hi,

Been there, and just as sick as you with the first chemo session. Used most of the drug you listed and was still sick. Went to a different oncologist who added aloxi, phenegren (the best!!!), and emend (very expensive). With these, I made it through my 6 months of treatment.

Good luck to you.

Hi,

I've have been able to stop the whole throwup stuff with Zofran.  You might try that.  It is an antinausea drug.

I was on the same chemo regimen as you and found Zofran to be a god-send to me!  (Unfortunately, it costs $300 a pill, and my insurance won't pay for it unless I am taking it during chemotherapy treatment. It has been 9 months since my last chemo treatment, but I still have nausea and vomiting at least once a week)

I have found that stress affects my ability to control nausea, and take Xanax in order to control my anxiety. If I take it proactively, it controls nausea.

I have difficulty smoking marijuana, but have found that if I eat small doses of food that is made with marijuana butter, my appetite is increased and my nausea is decreased. However, I become more aware of my pain and become very sleepy if I consume too much. Unfortunately, it is not legal for me to have anything to do with marijuana in my state....I have lost a total of 20 pounds and am 5'6" and 105 lbs. so.... I do what I have to do to stay alive.

God Bless and Best Wishes...
