Hello, my husband is on his way to get a PET and CAT scan. The doctor thinks he has lung cancer. He had a heart transplant in Jume 01 and is wed to the Mayo Clinic. How does Mayo in Jacksonville stack up to Mofitt in Tampa?

Thanks, Jo

Hi Jo: According to the following link for US News and Health report, Moffitt is listed as #16 and the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is listed as #49, for best cancer hospitals rankings. . http://health.usnews.com/health/best-hospitals/cancer-hospit

Thanks for the info. I am surprised Mayo is rated so much lower. Now I have to convince him to consider other options

Don't forget to look at MD Anderson, Orlando.  Very good hospital located in downtown.

MD Anderson Orlando was my first stop for a PET scan. The radiologist performing thoracentesis didn't monitor the procedure and I had a 2 1/2 hour wait for the doctor. Orlando pays for the right to use the MD Anderson name - a fact I was unaware of until talking to doctors from MD Anderson Houston.

I feel like I should respond to the negative posting about MD Anderson in Orlando.  My husband has been a patient at MD Anderson - Orlando for over four years.  The very fact that he has been a Stage IV Lung Cancer patient anywhere for this long is some testament to their aggressive treatment policies.  I think the very best doctor at MD Anderson is Dr. Bobustic.  He is a neuro-oncologist.  My husband starting seeing him when the cancer metastized to his brain - about three years ago.  My husband has been given everything imaginable to treat his cancer and, thank God, it has been effective in keeping him active and pain free.  He has never been told that he has 'x" number of years to live.  They have always been totally positive.  The doctors explained that quality of life for every patient is differant. They say that as long as his quality of life is good, they will continue his treatments.  They said that some patients consider their quality of life to be bad if they cannot play 18 holes of golf, whereas other patients have a good quality of life as long as they can be pain free and converse with their loved ones. I have to add that I think my husband's sugar free, low fat diet has contibuted to his ability to fight the cancer also.

I'm happy for you and your husband that you had a good experience at MD Anderson, Orlando. I believe there are good and bad doctors, experiences, etc. at any place one might go. When we left, I coughed up blood from for 2 hours and was more scared than when I arrived there. I just happened to have a bad experience there and I think if you had experienced what I did you just might feel like I do.
