PSA rising

I'm 66 years old had surgeery to remove my cancerous prostate gland October 2006.Since surgery my last four PSA checks as follows:

8-6-08     0.04

5-05-09   0.4

5-26-09   0.32

8-11-09   0.6

My surgeon stated that I will most likely need treatment, however. he would like to wait 8 months for the results of another PSA.  I'm questioning his hesitance, or should I look into treatment now, or is it to soon?  I'm worried, please give me your thoughts?

thanks

Howard

My husband recently died from prostate cancer and his doctor started had him do radiation as soon as he suspected the cancer had spread before surgery. When his psa went up even a bit he started Lupron (hormones) therapy. I would err on the side of caution, some of these cancers are very agressive (Dave's was). But at least we got 7 more years together thanks to his urologist

Howard the problems is we have treatment and we go back to eating and drinking the same food that got us the cancer on the first place. A few years ago I was told by my naterpath first stay away from sugary foods and drink and go on a low carb diet I did you know I have CFS Ive had it for 20 years with in a month it was gone yet no doctor told me about low carb diets or sugary foods

When PSA is above .1 and doubles within 10 months of surgery, it indicates a high probability of metastases.

Your surgeon has finished his job: you should now consult a medical oncologist expert in prostate cancer.

Howard I am sorry to hear of your rising PSA. Why wait? obviously something is going on somewhere, your PSA should be undetectable after surgery. When my PSA was rising every month after treatment I used diet and supplements to reverse my PSA. This has worked for over 3 years. You need to do something about.

Dan thank you for responding, what kind of diet are you on, and what are you taking for supplemenets?  Appreciate if you have the time to respond.

Thank you,

Howard

My first inclination is that you should insist on another PSA reading in 3, not 8 months. Also, go for a second and third medical opinion with urologists recommended by other friends, or professionals you trust. Getting post-surgical treatment may well be in the cards, but whether you are treated with radiation or hormones or chemo makes a big difference. Rely on your docs, but also rely on your instincts. You are asking the right questions, some of which I address further at conquerprostatecancer.com.

I had pre-cancer cells in my prostate plus rising PSA.  The doctors wanted to watch and wait to remove my prostate.  Then I changed my lifestyle, adjusted my diet and "exercised" my prostate.  Now I am totally normal.  PSA went from 3.8 to .9, plus I feel better than ever!  For more information visit cancerprostatehealth.com
