Hi All,

First of all let me Introduce myself. My Name is Deepak, and I am part of this forum since last 6 months. it was really a good platform where We can get Expert advice and can share our Experience.

Last Oct 2008 My father Got this disease unfortnatally. After some tests we knew that the Esophegal cancer was in Stage 4 with him. then we started treatment for this. we were getting lots of different opinion some good or some bad.He is 51 and Kind of Teatotller.

After 2-3 Chemotherapy Cycles we went for Sonography and CT scan. it showed Tumor on Esophegal wall was reduced up to 70-80 percent and the some Mates were presented in Liver was no more. So our Oncologist decided for surgry after 6 Chemo and some more Breathing test.

10'th March 2009 My Father undergone Surgry(Total Esophegamthy). After 6 month when we went for first follow up.Our Oncologist said Everything is Fine all the Evidence for deases were NED. Some small complications were there.

What happend some Fluid was in the LUNG of my father frm where the Oncologist Operated him. So they took it out (was about 2000 ml )and after test it was some normal water.Oncologist said no need to worry.

20 days back my Father got fever then our local physian suggessted some medicines for this the fever was like 98..99..100. it used to Vary. After medicines for some 20 days it was fine.

and from last 2-3 days Everything is fine and now he got some cough and some more Water got filled in his lungs and about 400 ml .

I am very confused,Is it because of surgry,Because of some diseas (as per we have done all test like VIRAL,MP and all Everything came Negative and His blood count is also in good Range), or why it got filled again ??

He has lost a good amount of weight after Surgry and Chemotherapy. How it will get Recover ? His Body Immune System has also became very weak.

We are trying to give him small meal 4-5 times a day.It also depends on his likings.

Currently we are cautious Because of His cough and Weakness and that LUNG water.

Please suggesst. I have lots of hopes from this forum.

Regards,

Deep

Hi Deep:

I do not know about the water in the lungs, but for the coughing I know when I eat anything, I cough. I did tell my doctors and they said it is the food irrating the new passage way and there really is nothing that they can do for it, that it is something I need to learn to except as it will be part of my norm from now on, so I try to chew well, drink small sips of water after each bite and shrug it off. I  hope some others can help you out.

Take Care and Be Positive

Hi Deepak,

My father's situation is very similar.  Diagnosed Stage III in Oct. 2008, surgery March 2009, and recently had 1.5 containers of fluid drained from his left lung.  He, however, is not NED...found out about a month ago and he recently started radiation and chemo.  Doctor said the fluid was from the cancer, but we didn't ask enough ?s about why it started to build up. It caused him to cough and lose some weight.

I believe the lung is deliberately collapsed during the surgery, which might be the true reason for on and off fluid build up. Further, low ALBUMIN levels can account for fluid retention in the body, a consequence of the treatment plan, and lack of nutritional impute causing malnutrition.

Any protein calorie is so important to your father right now since this is the substance that will help him heal. I hope this helps you in some small way.

Hello Deepak,

I was not stage 4, but I did have a problem with fluid in my lungs.  I had a large amount of fluid drawn off right lung after surgery and before I was released to go home.  It was more than a large soda bottle full....maybe like over a liter.  Not sure, I just know it was a big bottle full.  Then the doctor put me on diuretic to try to drain off fluid as it accumulated, but that didn't work.   I had another very large amount drawn off my lungs about 4 months later.   I was told to eat lots of protein also and limit sugars.  The doctor also said to exercise.....walk a lot.  Eventually, all the fluid went out of my lungs.  It helped my breathing a lot.  Get your Dad to walk as much as he can and try to increase the amount of walking each week.

It is a very slow process.  The eating will get better and he will eventually be eating lots, but it will take time.  For now, keep up the protein, get him active and stay positive.  The healing will come.

PS  I am a 5 year survivor and "no cancer".  God bless you.

Barbara

Hi,

I am not vegan, but have friends who are.  Take a look at these two websites. http://www.highproteinfoods.net/vegetables

http://www.ehow.com/how_2286430_get-protein-vegetables.html

My doctors recommended soups.  Looks like sweet potatoes and butternut squash would make good soups. Carrot juice is good and plenty of soy products.   Perhaps there are some folks who are vegan on this board.  The only thought I had is that high vegetable and fruit diet may make his bowels very loose.  That is a problem after surgery and with the added vegetables, he may need to look for some "binding" foods.  Here is a website with some suggestions. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Diarrhoea.html#r

Tongren healer, contributor to this board, has a lot of wonderful information.

Best wishes to you.  Everything will turn out okay.

I forgot something else.  IF your Dad does have complications with the fruits/vegetables and diahrrea,  rice is excellent too.  I remember that I loved cream of rice with soy milk, but it did bind me up very fast.  Keep this in mind for your Dad should he need to bind up loose bowels.

I also noted that brown rice is an excellent source of protein.  The brown rice would not be as binding as the white cream of rice cereal.
