My father has stage 4 Colon Cancer - Anyone Help w/Nutrition Advise?

My father has had several blockages and 2 major surgeries...removal of upper section of large intestine 04/08 and lower section of small intestines 07/09.

My father has had significant weight loss, no appetite, sleeps alot which upsets him, and very weak...alot weaker than the experience with chemo, etc...He does not expect to be "better" but he would like to just sit on his porch with enough energy to just sit without being so weak, and sick to his stomach...

I believe he needs some type of nutritional help...

I am curious if anyone has experieced naseau that seems to worsen every evening. We understand that his digestive system is still healing.

He drinks his boost and he eats 3 very small meals a day - very difficult but he knows he needs to so he does. He has many RX for naseau, pain, diarrhea, etc.... He has not had chemo since June because of all of the other complications.

Any advise please...

I am sorry to hear your father is going through difficulties. Have you tried plain ginger ale and saltine crackers? You may want to be a little careful with the ginger ale because the carbonation may bother your dad. When my dad was healing from his surgery I would shake Sprite bottles, let them sit and then open them and leave them open for multiple hours to allow some of the carbonation to subside. Sprite seemed to be my dad's favorite. That and Gatorade.

When the nausea subsides enough for him to eat, ask the oncologist about Megase. It's an appetite enhancer my dad was given to help him gain weight. It worked wonders- it made my dad very hungry. But I suggest waiting for your dad to stop being nauseated before attempting to eat a lot.

Best of luck

Sometimes the 'laziness' associated with chemo treatments is due to being dehydrated.  He might need IV fluids from the hospital.  My husband when undergoing chemo didnt seem to wait to get up out of the chair - I finally took him to the ER and he needed 2 bags of fluids and it helped alot.

My biggest advice is, check with your doctor.  You can certainly listen to any suggestions, but your doctor knows best.

When I was diagnosed with Stage IV, the docs and nutritionist told me not to change my diet because I was healthy and my blood was good.  I was obviously eating whatever my body needed to keep me healthy.  They told me, the problem is, so many patients change their diets, and then they don't know if the side effects are caused by the treatment or the diet change.  I did listen to them, however I did cut out drinking Coca Cola - my drink of choice.  Turns out, the docs were right.  I had nausea and none of the drugs seemed to combat it.  Well they finally suggested I drink Coca Cola - that did the trick.

Also, after my liver surgery, it was important that I eat as much meat as possible to help my liver regenerate.  It has grown back 95% and looks almost the same as it did when I first showed up.  In the hospital I had eggs, bacon and sausage for breakfast.  Burgers for lunch and steak for supper.  Found out I wasn't eating enough fat, the docs were going to inject me with fat until the nurses interjected and said-let me have some fun eating.  So the medical staff bought me a Chocolate cake.  I was also given oddles of butter with my bread.  I asked my doctors if they were worried about my cholesterol (which has remained low) they said they'd worry about that after they were done worrying about my cancer.

All this, when I was in the heart ward, because I have a heart murmur.  They were kind enough for the heart patients that I had my own room.  I could tell I was already unpopular from the food that was going into my room.  Although I love salad and thought about trading my steak one night for their salad.  But I would have felt awful if they would have had a heart attack.

So feel free to ask people hear what they did, but make sure you tell your doctor that you are changing your diet plan.
