Referred Back Pain

My husband had his surgery May 13, 2009 and has been suffering with what the doctor calls "referred" back pain.  He said that eventually, it'll go away.  However, we can't find any pattern that brings it on, ie food intake, and the only relief my husband can get from it is to lie down and wait for it to pass.  Sometimes it's mild and sometimes severe.  He had accupuncture and it worked great the first time but didn't work after that.  Is anyone familiar with this pain?  If yes, any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thank you,

Helene

Wish I could help with how to relief the pain. I was lucky, that is up until now, I had very little pain, however recently my incision in the back has been very painful at times unbearable, so I've made an appointment with my family doctor to have it checked out. It could be from over doing things, cause I do tend to push myself. Hope someone can give you some answers as they could help me also. Keep us posted on your husbands recovery.

Hello Helene,

I wish I had the answer for you, but I have had the same kind of pain for some time. I had my esphagectomy mid-2005. The pain came later - maybe a year or so. Since then I've seen local pain specialists as well as a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic. The local guy tried several kinds of nerve blocks but nothing has worked. (The trip to Cleveland was worse than a waste of time and gas. I was treated like a number, not worth the doctor's time. And he was supposed to be the "Best".)

I usually answer posts if I can give encouragement or information. In this case I can't, but I am very interested in what you find. I hope you find the answer.

Good Luck, KEEP MOVING, and Laugh Much,

Steve

I wish that I had read all your messages today because I had my Radiology oncology appointment with an outstanding Doctor who treated me from the start. While he was examining me he was pushing on my back near my incision and asked if I ever have pain and of course I don't but I would have asked him what if you do, for all of you and would have an answere tonight. He reviewed all my CD's and hard copies of my last eight months and was happy with everything and told me he has never had a patient go through surgery and recovery like I did. He then stated he could not believe the condition that I am in after this type of surgery only after twenty months. I felt good after I left there today. I will try and ask what causes this type of back pain in the next few days. Take care Phil A.

To clarify, this pain has zero to do with an incision site.  The original email was posted by my wife about my 'referred' pain.

My incisions are on my front side and the pain is being referred by some nerve to the right side of my back near the lower posterior ribs.. NOT related to any incision.

 Thanks for all responses.

They break a rib during surgery and your husbands back pain maybe that.  I have a little pain not much but I assume it's from the rib, but I only had surgery 3 months ago....rich bond
