I don't think there is a standard treatment...though some treatment plans are often stated as being standard. For example, for stem cell harvest, I underwent high dose chemo. I then followed up with back to back transplants...known as tandem transplant schema. Some advocate taking novel drugs and waiting for the the myeloma to become resistant before having a transplant. Then again, there are those who choose not to wait thus they treat the myeloma very aggressively from the begining...like with the tandem schema.
II took some form of chemo...whether high dose or novel drugs...from Nov 07 until July 09. Like you, I was a little surpised at the length of time I was on the chemo. I was in complete remission Jan 08, and I'm still in complete remission. You might look at it this way. How long are people on some form of drug that are treating other diseases besides cancer? We're getting to a point where myeloma may be controlled...that may mean a life time of drugs; but, it's better than the alternative
Best of luck to you and your wife
