Hello Friends,

My father is 74 and having Prostate cancer. The first it is dected in November 2008 when the PSA was 49.01 ng/ml. He had laproscopic surgery in December 2008 and post surgery after 6 weeks the PSA was 2.00ng/ml. After biopsy it was confirmed it is cancer. Now after 7 months of surgery we did the PSA and it was raised again by 47.01ng/ml. Treatment is going on and on and off he is having back lower back pain and sometimes nausea.

Please guide me wht do i do?? Is homeopathy is the best treat ment in future or should i continue with the same???

Dear Anil,

Anil,

Your doctor did not serve you well. At 74 your dad should never have been subjected to surgery, especially with a psa of 49 which indicates that the PC had already spread outside the prostate. I would even say that this borders on malpractice.

The only thing you can do now is go on ADT3 , which is Lupron, Casodex and Proscar which in many cases can manage the PC for years. If that doesn't work the next step is chemo, Taxotere, or a similar drug.

The best advice is to get a good oncologist. I hope for the best for your dad.

Hi John,

I saw your message to Anvil regarding her father's rising PSA. I agree that at 74 years old, probably nothing should have been done. The reason I am writing you is because it sounds like you are in perhaps the same situation as my husband. I write on his behalf because he still has a hard time dealing with all of this. Anyways he is now 60, at 55 years old  had a psa of 64, had a RP,  PSA went down 1.0 and over the last five years has risen to 25, our oncologist over the last five years has recommented hormone therapy but my husband has declined. everything else is greart, bone scans are clean, no bone pain, just the darm rising psa. so finally we all agreed once it got to 25 we would start the treatment, in three months went down to 1.1 and also at six month interval. only side effects are extreme hot flashes. oncologist has recommented one morer shot (lupron) and then see how it goes over the next 9-12 months and if the psa goes up (which i know it might)l, then starte therapy again. You indicated you have been on treatment for years and I was wondering how things are for you and anything you can recommend.

take care

Ilona

Llona,

I'm not in the same situation as your husband.  I just stopped Casodex after taking it for 6 months to reduce my prostate size so I could have seed implants and IMRT, which I completeted 4 weeks ago. Casodex took my PSA from 30 to 0.02 in about 4 months.

The most effective protocol for HT now is ADT3, which is Lupron or equvilant, Casodex and Proscar for at least 24 months, then maintenance with Proscar which makes the psa rise more slowly givng you more off time between treatments.

Many have been on this treatment for years, so keep the hope up. Diet and supplements are also very important in slowing progression. Regular excercise is a must including weights.

A good book to read is "Beating Prostate Cancer: Hormone Therapy and Diet" by Dr Charles Snuffy Myers.

I suggest an out-patient procedure called orchiectomy, which will eliminate the cancer-feeding testosterone resulting in a low or non-existent PSA reading. I had this procedure (testicle removal) about 2 years ago and subsequent PSA readings have been negligible.

Hi Anil,

My dad is going through something similar as your dad.  My dad is 72 years old and he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer.  He had to go through that extremly uncomfortable biopsy and after they confirmed that it was cancer, his oncologist suggested combined hormone therapy (Casodex and Lupron injections).  He has been on Casodex since June and he had his 1st Lupron injection in July.  He is scheduled for the next Lupron injection in October.  Thus far, he has experienced some hot flashes.  They did not start right away but over the past month or so, he has been getting them to the point that he has to sometimes lay down afterwards just to recuperate.  He has some mild lower back pain.  However, he is not experiencing the bone pain that he had prior to being on these meds.  Thus far, he has been able to tolerate the side effects.  It has given him a better quality of life because a couple of months ago, his quality of life had drastically diminished.  So I'm grateful to God that he seems stronger now and I pray that he will continue to be.

I wish your dad the best and I will keep you both in my prayers.

Warm regards,

Mallie
