Hi Andy

In November 2007 they found a 3cm tumour in the head of my pancreas very close to the portal vein.  I had 24 hour chemo and radiation for 5 weeks to shrink it, which it did.  They operated and it had spread through my duodenum and some of my lymph nodes.  Unfortunately they could not clear the margins.  I had 3 months of heavy duty chemo after the surgery and my CT and Pet scans have been clear ever since July last year.

I saw my oncologist 2 weeks ago and my tumour markers have gone up.  I had a CT scan straight away and it showed something in the region of the surgery but they could not tell if it was a recurrence at this stage.  I will go back for more blood tests in 2 weeks and see where it is at then.  I am worried of course but trying to stay positive and not think the worst.

Melbourne centres will be the closest for you guys and I would think their facilities would be excellent.  Not up to me but shop around and see someone you are comfortable with and who isnt full of doom and gloom. Keep hopeful, if I listened to everything everyone said I should have been dead months ago.

Take care and if I can help in any way I will.

My husband lasted about 7 weeks  after his diagnosis.  He had 5 rounds of chemo and Tarceva once a day.  His liver began to fail as well.  The doctor told me that the cancer wouldn't kill him but that pneumonia would.

He was asked to be the Grand Marshall in our local Fourth of July parade.I didn't see anyway that he could do it, but he did.  Following the parade, we went home and he went to sleep.  He passed away at 11:29 a.m. on the 5th.  I was not ready, but I think this was his plan.

This is one of the most horrible illnesses and certainly the most hopeless.

May God help you through these times,

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother, My mother also has stage 4 pancreatic cancer that has spread to her liver, she was dx on Feb 24, 2009. She is taking Gemzar Chemo once a week for 3 weeks and off a week, She takes tarceva (Chemo) pill every morning. It was to late with it being stage 4 to do any type of surgery. I'm located in Houston, Texas.

MD Anderson has a wedsite that you could go to to check out information. We as a family decided to treat my mother close to home at a cancer center by her house, our doctors are affliated with MD Anderson and use the same treatment on her without having to drive across town, I don't think my mother could of handle being in the car for the hour drive, she said that she would have already quit treatment if she would of had to make that drive.

This is a fast spreading cancer and time is not on your side.

The cancer treatment they are giving my mother is helping srink the tumors, and prolong her life, the treatment has helped with the pain.

They did give her morphine and she did have to use it for the 1st  month, becareful with the morphine,  When things get bad now my mother will take a vicodin, but until they can shrink the tumors some, please keep her comfortable, no one gets an award for not taking thier pain medicine. And she won't get hooked on the drugs, you can't get hooked on something you need.

They gave my mother 6 months to live, we are on month 7, it has not been an easy road for her or us, losing your mother and seeing her struggle to fight to live is one of the hardest things...The best advise is when she starts some sort of treatment, make sure she drinks plenty of water, I'm talking 6 to 8 bottles everyday, this keeps things moving, once she stops drinking or eating and just wanting to sleep all the time the body will shut down. My mother crys about all the water she has to drink, the treatment makes her feel full, but she has to do this!

As of last week we are doing IV Fluids everyday 1000cc, just to keep enough fluids in her, her kidney blood numbers are high and that means blood is spilling over into the kidneys, which means she could go into Kidney failure, so we are hoping this will help and when she has that much fluids everyday she only has to drink 3 bottles of water, now do you understand what I mean about making her drink water...You don't only have to worry about the cancer you have to worry about the other organs also in the body failing.

Hair loss- If the treatment she gets on makes her hair fall out, she might experiece her head hurting to ease this pain cut her hair real short and this will help, my mothers head hurt really bad and it scared me, I was thinking the cancer had spread to her head, but what it was is when the hair dies it causes the head to have knots and hurts them, this will happen when the hair starts to fall out, I just cut my mothers hair really short and that helped her, no doctor told us this information.

The path that you are on will forever change your life, No one can take the place of our mothers, My mother is 67 and a young 67 at that.

Your mother will be tried all the time, take her for walks to keep the bowels moving, because the pain medicine will stop her up, so remember water, walking are good for her, even if you are walking real slow, just as long as you have her up and moving around...

I don't know all the answers, I only know what we are doing for my mother and what our path has been like for the last 7 months.

Oh my mom has lost 50 pounds in 7 months.

Keep us posted on your mother, and God be with us all!

thankyou for taking the time out to share your information in what i know is a mentally and physically draining time. As i read your letter i had tears rolling down my face at the frustration for all the pain and misery of it all. I really cant understand when we can fly people to the moon why cant we find a cure for cancer, why do those who are inflicted with this terrible disease have to suffer so much.

my mum like yours is in immense pain and is living on a cocktail of drugs to try and keep her comfortable, she can hardly eat or drink and when she does she is often very sick. we are yet to start chemo we are still waiting to see an oncologist, she is having a biopsy on monday to find out what type we are dealing with.  we have just started her on some natural herbs like oxygen drops, essiac, ganoderm and a few others in the hope it will help.

will keep in touch. i wish a heart felt best for your mum

smiles

Hi Andy,

I am terribly sorry to hear of your mom's diagnosis.  I live in the United States (NY), and am primary caregiver to my dad (age 62) who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April of this year.

The absolute best advice that I can offer you is to RUN, do not walk to the best surgeon you can find who is experienced in dealing specifically with pancreatic cancer.  DO NOT accept that the tumor is unresectable unless you hear that from such a surgeon!  Surgery is the only chance for a cure and time is, unfortunately, of the essence with this terrible disease.

I don't know if you would consider coming to the U.S. for treatment, but if so, there are 2  very well-known comprehensive cancer centers that I would recommend for a consult with a surgeon:

1.  Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland

http://pathology.jhu.edu/pancreas/index.php

2.  MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas

http://www.mdanderson.org/patient-and-cancer-information/can

Best of luck to you and your mom!  Take good care!  :)
