Afinitor Not Successful

My husband started Afinitor June 14 and had a CT scan yesterday. Afinitor had no effect and cancer spread from liver and kidney to his lungs and lymph nodes. He had 3 choices - nexavar, trial or do nothing. He opted to try nexavar. We are grateful for the 3 wonderful years he has had since his initial prognosis of less than a year. Anyone have other suggestions?

Sorry to hear your news. You just have to take the drugs offered and hope they work, all in this field have the capacity to work for a little or relatively long time, some work for some and not for others - its hit and miss. I was on sutent for over two years but it had in fact stopped working around December 2008 (before two years) I had to have radiotherapy so no treatment during that time, I have now opted for a trial to allow me more options with drugs afterwards - I am on AXITINIB - I wont know for a week or so if its working for me - its all so fraught with uncertainty but you have to keep going, there is no other alternative. What trial drug were you offered? Regards Railwayman

hi did you say he is on nexavar for 3 years?? my dads on it 6 months. just had another stable report! good luck! was just curious about the length of time your were on nexavar and how many per day? dads been on 3 perday about 3 months now. he couldnt walk with 4 a day with the bad callouses on feet. the 3 hes tolerating but still has pain in the feet. hope you continue to do well. god bless! donna d

Donna,

My husband just started Nexavar. His cancer progressed after 2.5 years on Sutent. Afinitor was unsuccessful so he is trying Nexavar. Glad to hear your husband has had success with nexavar.

Hi,

My wife is on the combined treatment between Nexavar & Avastin and these approach has been working for almost a year. Please consult your doctor whether these would be possible since there are on-going research and several trials which indicates that the combo would generate an extra boost with stronger benefits to RCC patients.

my huband tried Sutent then Tonsil before getting Nexavar Could not do the 800 or 600 mg a day too many side affects however here we are stable for 2 years and going strong. First 5 months were scarry but life is good. Walking or biking daily and seeing St. Louis like we were on vacation every day. good luck

I take care of my father-in-law. He just started Afinitor one week ago. I can't get him to eat anything except Ensure milkshakes. Is this normal? He's losing weight and getting weaker.
