Is there any hope for us? What can we do?

Hello...I'm a 13 year old girl who has a 65 year old grandfather who is suffering from Stage IV (4 I believe...) Esophageal Cancer. It's pretty aggressive at the moment and all we can basically do is pray and give hope. We have been told we cannot do anything for him since he is too weak for the aggressive chemo therapy...His cancer has spread a little bit to his brain, very small. And has spread to his lower spine, possibly in the bone. All we are doing right now is using some herbal tea,and put him on hospice (Not sure if I spelled that right?) We did have him on light chemo but were told his cancer was so aggressive it wouldn't do any good. We really want to fight this cancer away...But are afraid we have come to an end..My grandfather is pretty depressed and believes he has a few months to live..Is there any hope? If so,what other stuff can we do? Chemo is out of the question,as is radiation..They said both chemo and radiation could not be enough and the aggressive chemo could kill him...

 Thank you...

Please pray for my grandfather. :(

God bless all.

I read your post and previous ones too and am very sorry to hear about your grandpa. My mother was dx with stage iv too in April. The cancer had already spread to many of her lymph nodes. She chose to have a stent instead of feeding tub, but the stent caused her excruciating pain. I pushed her doctor to give her radiation and then chemo (taxol only). I asked her doctor what dosage she is receiving and was told palliative not aimed for cure, but to prolong life. After only one round of chemo, her PET scan showed excellent response to chemo. Her esophageal tumor shrunk significantly (partially due to radiation and partially due to chemo), her lymph nodes in her neck and under her arm had resolved, and others significantly decreased FDK uptake (due to chemo). Reduced dosage is better than nothing, and it did miracle to my mom. She just finished two rounds and will continue chemo (not sure for how long). Overall she tolerated well with minimal vomitting with the help of anti-nausous meds. Her appetite increased.

So check with your grandpa's doctor to see if they can resume chemo at reduced dosage. Please continue to pray for your grandpa and cherish every day you have with him. God is a great doctor. In Him, nothing is impossible. Never give up hope. I will pray for your family and your grandpa.

Cynthia,

I am so very sorry to hear about your Grandpa.   This must be a very difficult time for all of you.  There is always hope.  I am sure your family is doing all they can to get the right doctors for your Grandpa.  Perhaps a clergyman could help you right now too.  I will be praying for him and for your family.

Your situation of your mother is far different from my grandmothers. =( They do not want to continue chemo no longer or radiation. Not even a little bit. The doctors have told us there is nothing we can do and even light chemo would just make him sick and wouldn't do any good or help him. I'm afraid we might have come to the end,But I'm praying every single day.....
