Please please help

The surgeon just closed my husband back up yesterday and said there was much more cancer than showed up on the pet scan. I think they waited too long after chemo/petscan and it started growing again. I also think they are giving up and I am ready to look for other drs. Does anyone have any ideas about what we can do (we live in Virginia). I think we would go anywhere--they said there were tiny spots on the liver---would proton be good for this?  Would drinking red wine trigger his cancer again? Would love some ideas to discuss with Dr.   Thank you so much

Sorry to hear your husband's surgery did not go as expected yesterday. They need a window between the completion of chemo/radiation (think it is more the radiation) and the time they do a PET in order to avoid false positive scans. But they also have a surgical window they like to fit into after radiation, before the tissue becomes tougher to work with surgically. I always feel vaguely disconcerted even when we get good PET/CT results because I know they can miss it totally when it's widely spread and not very concentrated in any area. When my husband consulted the surgeon, it was our understanding that if they found any cancer where his lung mets had been, they would close him back up.

Do you know how widely spread it was...you mentioned liver. If that was the only spread, perhaps someone with liver mets will come forward with suggestions for an appropriate place to go and talk about treatment. They may have given up on surgery, but could plan systemic chemo treatment if they feel there could be a benefit from it, or perhaps one of the newer treatments that target the liver.

I am so very sorry.  A second opinion  would give you peace of mind.  You probably need more information than you currently have.  My surgeon told me one of my options (if when she opened me up and found more cancer than anticipated) was to close the incision and send me home. Thankfully, when she opened me up, the cancer was contained.  That was 5 years ago.

Every day I read of more and more options being discovered to treat difficult cancers.  We have heard wonderful things about the work being done in Pittsburgh at the University of Pittsburgh medical center.  One of our friends brother was treated there for cancer which had spread throughout his body (including brain and liver)  and he has now made a complete recovery.  Miracles still happen.  My wishes and prayers are for direction for you and recovery for your husband.

I'm so sorry to hear about your husbands condition. Don't give up. Try MD anderson cancer center in Houston...I've heard wonderful things about them. My hospital is considered small here in Owensboro, Kentucky so trials aren't an option here, but if you go to some of the bigger hospitals such as md anderson in houston or vanderbelt in nashville tn. then trials are offered and are just what is needsd. I know a man personaly that was told to sell his buiesness and prepare to die until he went to vanderbelt for some trials and know he's cancer free. It's worth a shot. Good luck and I'll pray for you and yours.
