Good morning all,

My father had the Ivor Lewis Surgery on May 11th.  Since then he has had to get dialation about once a week as he has trouble swallowing.  Today they are putting in a stent?  Has anyone had to get this done?  I don't know what this is going to do and I am worried.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

God Bless,

My husband had stage 3 Esophageal Cancer. After his,chemo/rad/surgery he developed a fistula(hole), so they put a stent down his throat. It didn't bother him at all. He said he couldn't feel it. It stayed in for about 4 months, they they removed it(after confirming the fistula had closed). He is now eating and drinking decent amts of food. and is maintaing his weight. Good luck to you and your stent. It should be a breeze.........................

Hi Marianne:

Luckily I did not need any dialations so far, 13 mths post op, but some people do need them, until the new passage heals properly. Stents help to keep the passage way open and makes it easier to eat. Some are temporary and only needed for short periods of time. Good luck I know all will be fine.

My mother was dx with Stage IV EC in April. Since she had difficulty swallowing, her Gastro doctor placed a stent in to open up the esophagus. Ever since then, she has been feeling excruciating pain in both chest and back. I have to say everyone is different.

This is just our own experience. The fact that my mother is having pain with the stent may not mean that others will get it. I talked to her Gastro doctor numerous times about removing the stent since her esophageal cancer shrank after chemo/radiation. However, due to the tissues grow around the stent, it is not possible to take it out.
