Wait time for test results

I had a masectomy in March 08 & have been followed by the same doc since my diagnosis in January 08. I'm really frustrated by the fact that I have regular (every 3 to 6 months) CT scans & MRIs because they're watching a couple "ditzels" (spots too small to biopsy) to make sure there is no change. The problem is that the tests make me nervous & add to that fact it takes an entire week to get the results because my doc doesn't review them until the day I see her -- 1 week after the tests -- even though the radiologist has read them w/in 24 to 48 hours. Am I just being a baby about this or is it normal to have to wait this long for test results?

I certainly understand your anxiety.  I once was given a sedative before undergoing an MRI.  Doctor's seem so busy today and I'm sure for them one day just slips into the next etc. but I would mention to your doctor the anxiety you have in waiting for results.  If she or he has any compassion at all she will make a point for someone to call you when the results are in to hopefully relieve some of your stress.  I have always found that the unknown is worse then knowing even if the news is not so great.  It is difficult to live your life hanging on the balance each day.  I've have learned over the years, however, not to dwell on the what ifs and just do my routine visits etc. as if it were a normal part of living which it is for me, and let the doctor's deal with some of the stress.  When the news comes, good or bad, it comes eventually and I will deal with whatever at that time and in the meantime I'm bent on living each day.  Hopes this helps!

Hi,

Waiting for the results of tests is one of the worst things we go thru.  What I do, the day after the test I call the office, tell them that I took a certain test yesterday, my cell phone is on and I would appreciate a call back with the results, even if the nurse calls back.  I explain to the doctor how highly stressful waiting can be and thay always call me back that day.

Last week waiting for results from bone scan thay actually called me 9 o'clock on a Friday night so I didn't have to wait the weekend.  I e-mailed them to tell them how grateful I was for their consideration.

I am very lucky to have found a very kind, thoughtful, caring doctor and staff who never seem to forget that I am a person.

Janice
