Hi, my name is Louis. My mom is a patient of NSC lung cancer stage wet IIIb, she just finished one cycle of chemo which is 6 times of chemo. She had a blood test today as every time they do a blood test one week after the chemo, the nurse has told us that my mom's blood platelet has been dropped to a place that we must keep her away from bleeding and injured although she's still not in a dangerous position. Because the oncologist was not in the office so I didn't have a chance to ask him if there's anything we can raise the blood platelet back to normal. I'm just wondering if anyone of you have experienced something similar and if anyone know what food can helps raising the blood platelet. Thanks!!

Hello,

Low platelet can make your Mom easily get bad infection.  If it is that low, you should ask the doctors to give her blood platelet IV supplement.  You can also try to eat plenty of Berry Fruits family ( rasberry, blueberry and black grape ) for raise antioxidant level in your Mom blood stream.  Also eat with more Shitake Mushroom (avail at Whole Foods or Trader Joe), try purple mushroom herbal pills.

Best wishes,

Hi,

Chemo treatments can and usually do affect blood counts, white/red cells as well as platelets. These numbers usually come back up bythem selves, but at times you will need to get help from extra medication.

While undergoing treatments, you will need to be carefull any ways, so the patient should get as much rest as necessary to allow their bodies to rebuild and stay away from public places as much as possible to reduce chances of getting infection, etc.

Don't worry, there are plenty of ways you can get help.

Bests to you and all.

My husband was receiving chemo for colon cancer from Dec-June 2009.  His WBC ran low many times and he would get Neupagen(sp?) and Neulasta injections.  One a single powerful shot that caused severe bone pain or he would take home a serious of injections that I would have to give him every other day.  His platelets were an issue two times and he could not receive chemo because they were too low and we were told there was nothing he could do to increase them.  Thought I'd offer what I knew, but every dr. and case is different.
