Dacarbazine, how long does it takes to start working?

Hi, my mum (54) has a stage 4 mucosal melanoma. Main site is the vagina and the metastasis are in the lungs. She started 2,5 months ago taking dacarbazine every 28 days. Two days ago had the first scan to measure the metastasis (6 in number), regardless the chemo they grew rapidly, from 4mm each to 7.5mm. We don’t know how to interpret this trend, does it means that the dacarbazine is not working on her or just that the chemo needs more time to show its effects?

thanks, Nicola

Hi again Nicola,

In my experience it is usual that there would be a positive reaction after a couple cycles if there was going to be one.  I am not a fan of Dacarbazine alone.  Even when used with other things response is limited.  It didn't work for Melinda when combined with IL-2, Interferon, Vinblastine and Cisplatin.   I'd guess the doctor is trying to figure out another tact by now.  So I'd expect it.  The Ipilumumab-Fomazine you mentioned is something to look forward to.  Let us know how it turns out.

Take care of yourself,

Clint
